Not quite, John - half a bottle of Scotch left courtesy of Iliria but then it goes dry till New Year. Then again, if we actually get the promised snow over the next couple of days I'll be dry but happy ;D

Hello Iris,

Unfortunately I have not heard from or about the Smees since about 1989/90. They were part of the DAF Owners Club "team" that did a big tour from UK to Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Netherlands. They had a beige 55 saloon at the time. (Do you remember me - bright yellow mimosa 55?)

David and Elaine Owen - really nice people, who were about the second DAF Owners Club people I met when I first joined in 1981. You are correct - they lived in London, then Suffolk, then moved to France, then somewhere else in France. Again, personally I have no idea how/where they are, but let's hope someone might.

David was a very good artist and drew lots of covers for our magazines in the 1980s, and Elaine was the first and original editor of our magazine - I was always grateful for the informal tips that she gave to me!

Good luck with the search.

Best wishes.

Richard

I used to get that from my old 2.5l BMW auto !!!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I average more than that in my 4.3 litre V6 Chevrolet Van, although of course I tend to use that on long motorway journeys where it really is quite impressive.

I remember picking up my dad's 33 years ago from Essex, and being told that it was nearly out of fuel, so I put a tenner in and it ALMOST got me home! Ran out on the motorway about 100 yards from the slip road (where typically a police car turned up and quite rightly told me off for trying to tow it off using an old seat belt as a rope!).

Happy days.

2 position throttle is supposed to be the most economical way to drive a daf. Over the 5000 miles Ive done in Gladys Ive got an average of 38mpg. Which is pretty good worst was going Watford where I got 6mpg fiddling had to be done after that. Best 68mpg on a nice long trip at 50mph which was very impressive .

Something has to be wrong there... :o Miles per Gallon (imperial or not) should be higher for a DAF.

*Unless of course you have a "Lead Foot" Mr. Onne.* ;) ;)

"Liquid Gold"....LOL. Yes, I'm sure it is that in the UK.
Here it is still not too bad. Yesterday I paid $ 2.65 for a US gallon.

Not bad is it.... No sorry it is actually really quite bad. Best I've had out of the 44 was 36 to the gallon, on the way to Anglesey. Worst was for the 55 in the lake district, certainly when going up wrynose and hard knott pass.

Cant really believe that I have used over 400 gallonsof liquid gold!
