Ok superglue worked for a bit and it is not dropping anywhere near as low. But it has started too drop again incedently this only happens when the engine is warm and is intemittant so I supspect dafdaffer is probably right about the valve. So 3 stupid questions
1. Where is the anti run on valve?
2. How do I test to see if its the problem?
3. Is it likely to repairable or will it need a new part, if so can I get them?

Apart from this the car is running excellently apart from the heater has given up might need to check the exchangers.

Hi Paul,

It screws onto the side of the carb and has a wire running to the dizzy (a green wire on my 33 with a spade terminal).

Guess best way is to try a replacement. I got one from Danny, second hand, cost EUR10.

Yep, short for distributor.

The sign-off is good mate but I don't think Gladys will appreciate being called a 'dunny'. :o

Thankfully I don't think we have any Australian forum users here! ;D

Looks like Gladys prepares for another long distance run tommorow seeing as arriva trains want to charge nearly £70 for a return ticket. If Gladys only does 25mpg and I would be very annoyed if that where the case it will only cost £60 + no waiting for delayed trains, and no rail replacement bus service. Ohhh fun!!.

Wish me luck

Back from the long run somewhat worse for wear as there was a point when I thought she wasn't going to get me home. She was idling very roughly and wouldn't come off idle. I managed to coax her through it however she is still idling very rough, backfiring, down on power, jerky on the overun and incredibly revvy at anything more than 40mph. I think I have something to do this week any suggestions on where to start, that is if she will again once shes cooled down.

Paul

p.s. first thing on my list is a full service ,new plugs , dizzy cap, ht leads, oil change, set points they dont look like they need replacing, engine timing and a drive and generator belt tension. Is there anything else that I ought do?

Ok think ive got to the bottom of the rough running choke wasn't returning all the way at the carburettor. When I get time to do a full service probably wednesday that should be sorted. I was able to reduce the revvyness by cleaning the contacts on the condenser and on all ht leads, going to play with the vaccum linkage see if I can get it perfect it seems to me it needs a different setting for home than it does for uni. Combine that with a belt tension and all should be well.
fingers crossed.

Choke woould definitely cause rough running when hot (and horrible fuel comsumption) but condenser / leads shouldn't affect the "revviness" because how the engine revs at a given speed is a function of the drive ratio only.

If it was running like a real dog you might get a slight increase because of lower manifold vacuum (more throttle needed for the same power = lower vacuum) but that would be cancelled out by the centrifugal change-up by the time you got to 60 or so.

As for the vacuum valve, there's no reason at all for the setting to change once it's set unless other settings have changed or the throttle linkage has been disturbed. It's worth checking its setting as the final step in a thorough service / tune-up because going from bad tune to good will require less throttle for a given power output / engine speed but just changing it in isolation without making sure the rest is spot on will only leave you having to keep fiddling with it as conditions change.

With any car, if the basics ain't right you're flogging a dead horse altering anything else. The Dafs have some pretty complex interdependencies because of the transmission system so it becomes even imore important to be sure of the basic first!

she definatly seems happier oh and when the I was checking the choke I noticed a fair bit of gunk in the carb which I cleaned out that cant of been helping. Come wednesday I have all day to tinker and get her running perfecto. She needs to be as shes going to newbury show in 2 weeks and I am determined that she isn't going to show DAF up!!

Anyone wanna give me a hand or at least give me step by step instructions for fitting a radio. I have 2 pod speakers that glue onto the parcel shelf and a head unit. What other things do I need and then how do I go about wiring them in. I want to set aside at least one day this week as DAF day so dont have a problem travelling somewhere for help infact it would give me a much needed excuse to leave Coventry and enjoy myself for abit. Anyone fancy a beer (lemonade for me) and a bit of time with a fellow daffer give me a shout as long as I dont have to drive for more then 2.5 hours each way im happy.

hi paul.

you are welcome to come down here anytime, but it may be a bit far from coventry.

a radio should not take you too long anyway.
the only things you should need are :-[br] speaker wire
wire for the power and earth.
in line fuse for power line. (if not fitted to radio)
block connectors.
insulation tape.
swear box ;) ;)

good luck.

been doing some spannering today and intend to do some more tommorrow. I discovered the cause of the idle problem. It was as dafdaffer said the little valve on the side of the carb, however the problem was that it keeps unscrewing itself and then it will barely idle. I have screwed it in with a really big spanner and am pleased to report it seems to be willing to stay put. She also had her drive belts tensioned today and I have replaced all the vaccum pipes. Tommorow I will service and tune the engine an excuse to use my new multimeter hehe. The tinkering Ive done today has improved her no end. The idle speed screw seems to have no affect on the idle speed though hopefully her service tomorrow will solve it. I am abit more confident that she isn't going to dump me on the way to work like she was threatening all last week.

hi.

a couple of drops of superglue on the threads will stop things vibrating loose, but will break free easily when you need to undo them.
