Welcome to the DAF Owners Club discussion forums. These have been online since 2004 and are open to anyone - club member or not.
The DAF Owners Club has been the original and leading source of information about DAF Variomatic cars in the UK since 1980.
We are known throughout this country and abroad for providing accurate and relevant help and advice about DAFs and the Variomatic transmission.
We also provide new specialist spares including drive belts and filters and we supply to the UK and worldwide.
More information about DAFs and the club at the main website - www.dafownersclub.co.uk.
Would be a shame to scrap it but if you really think it can`t donate any more items then so be it ...can we really let another 55 coupe shell be crushed
Today, I have been mostly DAFfing...and drinking tea!
N/S/F wheel bearing slightly noisy O/S handbrake lever restricted movement Exhaust not supported Handbrake below required efficiency (21%)
Why I'm not happy is:
Checked both wheel bearings on Saturday and they're fine - there's slight noise from the speedo cable
Checked both handbrake levers at the same time - the n/s is looser than the os but they both move fully when the handbarke is operated
The exhaust mount fail was the spliced rope loop that's been on there for the past 2 MOTs that the same guy passed her on. It's still there and it's still holding but he won't allow rope now. Finding those thin (12mm) rubber rings is just about impossible round here - all anyone lists is the 14mm modern type that won't fit in the mounts
Checked on the way home and the handbrake will lock both rear wheels at 30 mph on a dry road, leaving twin black stripes. That is (a) more than 21% and (b) an automatic pass anyway if it can lock the wheels.
Still, he's the tester - though for how much longer on our cars I haven't decided yet!

If you need some space to store some parts you know where I am. I'll nick the keys to my dads office. He has a big garage shed type thing that is pretty much empty to stuff some bits in!
Second try lucky - she's now legal for another 12 months thanks to an exhaust mount "borrowed" of Betty - who will be getting some love of her own soon!

Well, pending any last minute problems, we'll be saying goodbye to Tilly on Wednesday.
Kind of sad, but has to be done because I simply can't give them all the attention they deserve. And I get the feeling she'll be staying in touch

was a bit concerned as had moved engine away from being static timed when I was rotating the rods to do the big ends up and couldnt remember if the dizzy drive went in then or after the pulley was on the front. Procedure as follows, temporarily fit crank pulley, line up timing marks drop dizzy drive in (will only go in in one place as the cutout on the shaft is there to get it get past the drive gear) temp put dizzy in see which side the rotor is pointing to (in my case RHD looking from front) gently rock engine back an forth whilst feeling to check the tappets are both on the move on the left side (on the rock so to speak) breathe sigh of relief and bolt it all back together..
find 6v battery is dead as a doorknob wont hold any appreciable charge desulphate battery, now will hold enough charge for ignition circuit use oil sucking device to pull petrol past the fuel pump to the top of the fuel line by the carb (save endless priming) turn engine a few rotations and realise the fuel pump is shot strip shroud, fan , dynamo, dynamo brackets off to get to fuel pump find you cant for the love of god get LH heat shields off the barrel no matter what you do with fuel pump in place, nor can you get to back bolt of fuel pump take top off fuel pump, fit s/hand 33 top which seems to have valve action refit bits, turn engine by hand find good pulses of fuel so fill small jar whip top off carb using oil sucker hoover all the crap out the bottom, whip jets out blow through them with aerosol carb cleaner use oil sucker to slurp through all the ports on the carb (you can hear it clearly in the venturi when it clears crap) refill float bowl with the naked petrol pipe, refit float, carb top etc turn a couple of times to finalise fuel level, try throttle lever confirm fuel pumps from accelerator jet give it a couple of squirts...
