Hi all Done 200 miles in Dolly now, a couple of gremlins have appeared. there was a screaming noise from under the bonnet which I traced to the front dynamo bearing, I had another 12v dynamo so tapped the noisy bearing out and in with the new The second annoying thing was the starter solenoid would not engage on the key, I found the wiring had chafed through on the choke cable and there was a dead short which seems to have burnt out the wire in the loom, so am having to run a separate wire to the solenoid. If nothing else serious appears I shall be happy

Hi all,had a reminder last week Dolly's mot is due. Hardly seems possible a year has passed, jacked her up over the weekend to check underneath, adjusted the belts, brakes and tappets and found the frustrating rattle thats been annoying me. One of the baffles in the front cross silencer has come loose, a few swipes with a ball hammer cured it, at least for now. Took her out for a run today about 45 miles. was climbing a hill when one of the new Jag XF shot past three of us like a rocket. It was fairly new with those big expensive alloys. I caught him up after a mile or so in the traffic and then noticed a smell of burning rubber getting stronger. I thought NO NO not now. I looked around for telltale whiffs of smoke and then noticed smoke coming from the Jag, he pulled into a side road and I noticed his nearside front tyre shredded, Not his day

The culprit the cause of all the blue smoke and lack of forward motion. removed after a struggle and lots of words not used in church. Fortunately spoke to Matt at Essex Dafs and he has one and is coming to Cornwall so will deliver

Hi electrics is not my strong point. where is the best place to connect an ammeter to check the charge rate on my 6volt 44? any assistance appreciated

I know where to wire it in, electrically, it should be in series with the battery supply in to the car, but not sure how the wiring is arranged in the 44. From what I can see from a wiring diagram here: www.flickr.com/photos/19864651@N00/5471055048/sizes/l/The battery positive terminal has 2 cables, one heavy cable to the starter motor, and another to the voltage regulator, and then on to the fusebox. (some cars have the junction to the supply at the starter motor [or solenoid] instead of on the battery) You need a cable of the same size as that to the voltage regulator from the battery. Disconnect both ends, and connect the new cable at the battery, and run it inside the car to one terminal of the ammeter. The other ammeter terminal should go to the voltage regulator terminal. Be sure to use the proper crimp terminals, yellow for that size of wire, like these www.amazon.co.uk/Connectors-Insulated-Electrical-Connector-Terminals/dp/B07S6PKZF6/ref=sr_1_14?crid=20JQSTAN56RY9&dchild=1&keywords=crimp+connectors&qid=1623258807&s=diy&sprefix=crimp%2Cdiy%2C176&sr=1-14and use a proper ratchet type crimp tool, such as this: www.amazon.co.uk/Crimping-Tool-Insulated-Electrical-Connectors/dp/B07GFLWKTT/ref=sxin_10_ac_d_rm?ac_md=0-0-Y3JpbXAgdG9vbA%3D%3D-ac_d_rm&cv_ct_cx=crimp+tool&dchild=1&keywords=crimp+tool&pd_rd_i=B07GFLWKTT&pd_rd_r=e732a413-8125-435b-95b5-5f635b25e701&pd_rd_w=xQfDd&pd_rd_wg=FwpUb&pf_rd_p=73573abc-9548-43f0-87cb-a185286cee4c&pf_rd_r=D8Z47068QGHYGXX0F21M&psc=1&qid=1623258206&sr=1-1-fe323411-17bb-433b-b2f8-c44f2e1370d4. You may be able to hire/borrow a tool locally, if you think that it is a bit expensive. Tools that look like a pair of pliers are NO good, They do not grip the wire, and it will usually slide out after a short time, especially the bigger guage wire like these The ammeter should be a "plus 50-centre zero-minus 50 amp" like this one : www.amazon.co.uk/Tyagi-Racing-Ammeter-Ampere-50-0-50/dp/B008MT6VC2To see if the ammeter is correctly connected, turn on the lights, the meter will go over to the minus side. If it goes to the positive side, reverse the terminals connections. The meters light should be wired into the panel lights, and the metal body must contact the cars body for the light to work.

There's a very thick wire that runs from the battery to the starter motor and a smaller one that runs from the battery to the regulator; it is this wire which you might need to cut to connect the ends to the ammeter. However, I would caution doing this, and offer the following suggestions, with explanations:
1/ If you're interested in keeping an eye on your car's electrical health, a voltmeter (as opposed to an ammeter) would meet the task, as this would show if the voltage began to drop. With a 6 volt system the running voltage should be of the order of 6.5-7 volts, so if you noticed it dropping to 6 or below, you would know there was a problem. Were this to happen the generator warning lamp should come on anyway.
2/ With a 6 volt system the amperages used by the equipment is double those of a 12 volt system, so the wiring has to be twice as thick (you may have noticed how thick the wiring is!) and so any ammeter would need to cover a larger range (+ & -) probably of the order of 60 amps. Some ammeters don't need to be directly wired into the circuit and work by picking up the magnetic field generated by the current travelling along the wire (which is in proportion to the current) and use this field to indicate the ammeter reading. This type of ammeter would be far the best type to fit, as no wiring would need to be cut!
I hope the above helps you! Remember, although the voltage may only be 6, the amperages are HUGE, and a fire can easily be initiated if there's a short circuit!

Andrew said "a smaller one that runs from the battery to the regulator; it is this wire which you might need to cut to connect the ends to the ammeter." It is this wire I referred to, and why I said uses a wire of the same guage (thickness). I did think of a volt meter, but they all seem to be 12V, with a full scale of 16 or 18 Volts It would work, but on a 6V system, it would not read much !

Hi all Thanks for all the trouble you have taken to help with this I was not intending to make a permanent fitting of this meter and had never thought of a clip on meter. this might be be a better alternative as I can then use it for other vehicles. So will investigate on that auction site and let you know. Regards Bob

Hi all Sad to say it is time to let my 44 go onto pastures new. This is not something I wanted but I shall be 80 in a couple of weeks and ongoing health issues don't make things better. So details, I have owned her since 2011. The details of the full rebuild can be seen on this post, DAF 44 gone deep south. Reg JPC664K reg 11th January 1972. 6volt. 31200 miles. Engine stripped and checked, there were swirl marks still in the bores so I believe genuine, new rings and b/ends shells fitted anyway. New clutch, New belts, Primary rebuilt. Complete brake overhaul, shoes, cylinders, flexi hoses, all Kunifer metal brake and fuel lines. 4 good 155/70-14 Continental tyres All welding completed, undersealed and injected cavities( missed a bit on the boot lid). Coach painted Tekaloid Mimosa which has now faded more than I expected. Inertia seat belts fitted. many spares, brochures, blue workshop manual. Free road tax current MOT. £100 classic car insurance. Drive away for £1850 ( I have spent far more). You are welcome to view but remember the car is in mid Cornwall Being offered here before that silly auction site 01209 821306 or 07858 349023 for further details

I understand completely.
Earlier this year, I was contacted by a gentleman of "senior years" who I think owned DAFs in years past. He asked me if I knew of any DAFs for sale, especially a 44, as he would like to have one again.
I've emailed him to let him know of your car - the gentleman was genuine and not a "fly by night" speculator -sadly DAFs seem to end up is those hands, especially via the auction site!
If he replies to the positive, I'll let you know.

Hi,been down to Cornwall today to have a look at daydoodler's 44. It is in excellent condition, the only problem[as pointed out by Bob]is that the paint job has faded. The bodywork is in very good condition, the boot lid needs a little attention, but that is all I could see. Mechanically it is excellent,Bob still has it MOT'd each year and with the engine overhauled and a recent new clutch it is a good buy for someone who wants an up and running, reliable Daf, with a lot of good quality work put into this 44, for the money it is good value. Ignoring the paintwork I must admit I was very tempted, but my wife pointed out I still have the 33 van to finish, the Pick-up to restore and the Moggie Van to finish, so reluctantly I had to leave it with Bob. Like Bob I would be sad to see it on ebay, so if anyone in the club is looking to add to their fleet[and seeing Dafs beginning to go up in value]I would recommend "Dolly".

Unfortunately the gentleman who may have been interested is no longer in a position to proceed. So there is now a risk of auction...

I am emailing and phoning a couple of contacts to see if they might be interested.
If not, then the next suggestion is before going to dreaded auction, start a fresh "For Sale" advert on here. (The thread that this is in is too long for most people to read)

Well done Richard,it is a good car in all but the faded paintwork and as I have said it's up and ready to go. If I had decided to buy I would have used it as is and resprayed when convenient.

Hi All I have to report that my 44 left the county a few days ago. It was bought by the young man who was let down on the 33. so the car is now in South London. She passed her test the week previous with no advisories and I filled the boot with spares. I hope he join the club and posts on the forum. It was a sad sight to see her depart but needs must. I shall continue to watch all your activities on here and might even put my oar in occasionally, Regards Bob Daydoodler
