Another club mag. and another great read. It seems the bar is set a little higher with every issue.
Every time the magazine drops on my mat I wonder how much longer I will have the pleasure of a paper issue.
Modern day methods of communication seldom use paper, and soon there will be a generation who don't know anything other than electronic mail. Even this forum (very modern 15 years ago) is under threat.
This forum is very dear to me, I have learned a lot, got to know many people, found out about events and never felt alone in DAF ownership. It is quiet now as are all online forums, this is due to the likes of F/B which I dislike enormously due to it's throw away attitude to narrative. Forums have an index like a book, old school navigation if you like and a start and end to each topic, we get on together like old friends.
The world moves on though, and I have reluctantly, and with gritted teeth opened a F/B account. This is due to the fact that I need and want to interact with other DAF owners and enthusiasts more regularly than todays online forums allow. This does not mean I will not be here anymore, I have enjoyed this place and will continue to contribute for as long as it is available. For those of you who have beat me to it and are already on F/B, I will be frequenting the DAF and classic car pages as "AJ Simmo" you will not see videos of me brawling in the street, or washing my dirty linen in public etc. so feel free to make yourself known to me and perhaps your forum name so I recognise you.

Thank you very much for your comments. They basically reflect my thoughts and concerns. I, too, opened a FB account mainly to keep in touch with real friends and family - but I really don't "get" the fixation of it that so many people have, and all its "features".
What I do know, is that the art of discussion and conversation is rapidly disappearing and being replaced with "likes", and as you say, conversations as such quickly disappear. And we often read and hear about various crisis caused by this new antisocial media.
The only feature of FB that I agree is better than these Proboards, is the simple way of putting photos on. And that is pretty much it.
Since various "DAF pages" were set up by others, no doubt with the best of intentions, our site here has virtually died a death - oh, and there are no "strict signing up rules" here either! (What is that all about?)
But on we go.
And be assured that as long as I am around along with Steve and Maggie, our magazine will be a magazine, as in paper, and something to hold. If someone did a time and motion study on how much time and effort goes in to producing each issue, we would be quickly advised to pack it in. Fortunately I still enjoy doing it, most of the time, even when I am struggling to find a way of filling the pages.
I am still convinced that one day, the whole "online" world will go pop or bang anyway with some sort of attack, and we will wander off to a comfy chair, maybe in our slippers, and hold a physical magazine, or a book, or a newspaper - remember those?! (And if we didn't live in such PC times, one might be tempted to light a pipe, too).

Hi Richard and andrejuan,
Just like to chip in here and say I find your comments to be a breath of fresh air in this increasingly stale place we now find ourselves. I don't see the attraction of facebook either though I have an account for use with those that matter to me. The rest is of absolutely no interest.
I still don't have a DAF but have owned one in the past and driven a couple of models. The first was an 850cc (I think) 46 estate and the later one was a 66, registration of the latter OWT149M, I wonder if it is still out there somewhere ? Though I suspect it succumbed to the tin worms many years ago....quite sad.
Anyway, what I do have is a 340GL Volvo with the same transmission. The transmission makes noises which sound a little like worn bearings. I wonder if you can suggest anyone to take a look for me, I'd also like to make sure the belts are in good order. Car has covered a mere 22k miles since it was first registered in 1990.
So, to sign off for now, I'll just take the opportunity to thank you all for this forum. Long may it continue! Oh and Richard, how might I go about getting your magazine ? It's really about time I did that.
Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mike, The magazine is a club magazine, which is produced and sent to DAF Owners Club members four times a year. (That's another thing about social media - most participants aren't members of the owners club, so are actually missing out on really helpful information and advice etc.) You can find details of how to join the club on our main website - www.dafownersclub.co.ukWith regards to your 340's transmission, you are probably correct that it needs someone who understands to look at it or in the first instance try and provide a thought remotely. Whereabouts in the country are you?

Hi Richard,
I'm in Northamptonshire. Last one of these cars I had years ago, a 1980 345GL auto, I got that serviced at the Volvo dealership in Northampton. They were great and resolved an issue where the transmission was not changing up correctly. Until that service, I was using an awful lot of fuel!
That was around 1985 though, I think they'd struggle today as this car does not have an OBD2 port.... Such is progress.
Current car does change up ratio correctly, it's just a little noisy. Perhaps due to lack of use over the years. I'm not too sure how many times it has been serviced, for example.
Thank you for the link to club website though, I'll head over there a little later.
Mike

I think you need to be in touch with Graham Meinert. He is in Peterborough, so not that far really.
Data protection means that I am not allowed to share details between you.
What I can do is contact him and ask him to check these pages out and if you are happy, you can then be in touch directly.

Though I no longer own a Daf now, I think this forum is one of the best forums I go on. I am not a fan of FB either and have joined a few years ago; it is truly is a ghastly site but needs must. I am a member of the LCV Register and the club's forum is practically dead due to inactivity but as Richard say putting up photos on FB is easy unlike the pro boards set up unfortunately.

I genuinely don't get the fixation for it, and you read about so much tears and heartbreak that it creates. It's a shame that it's fiddly to put photos on here though - basic rule/guide is to "add attachment" and keep the resolution low. Re contacting Steve - I assume you emailed him? (I think it's possible they may be away at the moment)
