Ok, been looking for a while and finally got a nice Volvo 66 GL. Graham (Dafman 50) facilitated the purchase a week before Christmas and kindly drove the old girl up to me in Liverpool and I whizzed him straight back down to Peterborough in my modern car...didn't want to put too much stress on the old V66. Been out and about a few times, just local trips to shops etc and it drives nice. Attracts a lot of attention. Most people wouldn't have seen such a strange beast doodling along. A funny site indeed. ''What in God's name is that?'' I hear them shout...mouths wide open. Kids point and laugh...''Look Mum, It's a Noddy car'' All great fun. The old boy who owned it bought it when it was 18 months old in May 1979 and kept it ever since....WOW! Through thick and thin, 40 years. Quite remarkable. Every single MOT, service invoice, receipt, original handbook, sales brochures etc ...literally hundreds of documents in a whopping big folder...the most comprehensive history file EVER. Serviced every 6 months, fresh oil and fluids, wax-oiled every year without fail, all documented. No expense spared. There is even the original bill of sale from the first owner. Dated December 1977 from Brompton Motor Co. in Canterbury, Kent (Volvo/DAF Dealers). One new Volvo 66 GL in Beige..............£2,356.00 Car Tax ....................................£ 196.53 Delivery Charges ....................£ 55.00 Number Plates ........................£ 10.00 VAT @ 8% .......................£ 209.39 Petrol ......................£ 6.40 VAT on Petrol (12.5%) £ 0.80 12 months Road Fund Licence £ 50.00 Grand Total to Pay £2,883.92 Putting that 1977 £2883 into an inflation calculator gives a present day equivalent of £17,600

Thanks..It is in quite remarkable condition...very solid car. There are a couple of minor jobs to be done. I can't seem to get the front spotlights to work. The headlights and all other lights are fine, just the spot lights...hmm, will have to have a look at the wiring. Fuses all look ok. I also want yellow headlights...just like they had on the Continent. Should I just use a yellow bulb or should I put yellow film on them?

From memory of when I owned a Volvo 66 (the very famous early groovy yellow one) the spotlights are wired into the main beam circuit. However they do not automatically come on with main beam - there is a rocker switch on the panel in front of the gear lever which needs to be "on" to make the circuit. An completely with you re yellow headlights - Andrew has supplied them to me over the years and they are just so right.

yes, there is a rocker switch in the console but they are either not wired properly or some other fault. will check it out at weekend. Auto electrics are not me really but will certainly have a poke around. Yes, yellow headlights...super cool European look.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me what the brown wires are for...see pic Hmmm, obviously something homemade with the block connectors. Given its proximity to the console, it might explain the spot light question. Just a thought.

yes, looks like some wiring 'adaptation' has been going on. The brown wire looks part of the original wiring lume..? Looks like there has been a radio at some point but has been taken out. I may need to have an auto-electrician look at it. I would like to re-fit a radio at some point. Maybe a modern 'retro' look one??

Hi,just a thought, does it have a radio or has one been removed? Without a close up of the wiring block it's difficult to diagnose.....starider

Hi, have just managed to get the close up of the brown wire, it's certainly part of the wiring loom,a circuit tester should tell you if it's a live connector. It does look a little like the sort of wiring for an early radio i.e.live feed and a couple of white wires for a speaker....starider

thanks starider, yes it appears to be for the radio. There is no radio at present but it has had one. I can see someone has cut the speaker cables...? I need to get the spot lights working...will have a look at weekend. The guy next door to me is very handy on cars, I will see if he can look.
Thanks for your input.

You have spare earth wires on relay panel which are not connected on some v66models . The spot lights worked on way up to you so can assume its either fault on bulb connections or a bad earth. As earthed to body by lights . Checked with jumper earth to new earthing point .

Congratulations on a fine buy! Brown wire is almost alway earth in Daf schematics. You say yellow lights for that continental look - but it was in France only! also the indicator glasses were white, there's a challange. I got spare V66 spotlights from a french scrapyard : they had yellow glass, normal main duplo lights were white glass with yellow bulbs as usual. probably there were no yellow Halogen bulbs then?

Hi, Have you checked the bulbs? it may just be they have both blown[can't remember if there are bulbs or that they are sealed units]. I can't understand the obsession with yellow head lights, they are legal in Mainland Europe and are accepted in the UK on visiting vehicles, but are they not legal on UK Vehicles in the UK? They do give poorer lighting. My logic is that if a car is UK spec, it should have the lighting it was supplied with i.e. UK Spec.Perhaps I'm too old and settled in my ways!!??.......starider

Going to check it out at the weekend...weather permitting. Yeah, could simply be the bulbs. They are not sealed unit, they are easily accessible from the engine bay. I think yellow headlights look nice! I know there is divided opinion on them. Apparently they ARE legal in UK.

I think yellow headlights look nice! I know there is divided opinion on them. Apparently they ARE legal in UK. Yes, yellow headlights are legal in the UK. Here is an extract from the current MoT Tester's manual - "The colour of the light headlamps emit must be one of the following: white predominantly white with blue tinge yellow" And here is a link to the full guide: www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-private-passenger-and-light-commercial-vehicles/4-lamps-reflectors-and-electrical-equipmentThe "fascination" that a few of us have for them - on particular yours truly and Andrew, is a generational memory thing! I/we remember watching ITC type dramas/TV programmes in the 196os/70s, and very often these stories would be based in "exotic European cities" - yes, especially France - and likewise many of the cars would have the yellow bulbs, and they just seemed to exotic, in a strange sort of way... That's my excuse anyway! I've got some really good pics of my DAFs yellow headlights somewhere - they have been on here before but I'll try and find them sometime.

Yes, fully concur Richard with what you say about the 'mystique' of yellow lights. I lived in Denmark and Sweden for a few years in the late 1980's and you used to see them over there...not as much as in France though. I always thought they looked cool. You didn't really see them in the UK. They allegedly give better light in some conditions. Would be nice to see some photos of yours.

Ah well everyone to their own, there is no way I would have yellow headlights on any of my vehicles. Yellow lights were deemed better in foggy weather in the 50s/60s, because yellow doesn't reflect so much in fog.I remember in those days it was possible to buy clip on yellow plastic lens to put on in foggy conditions and fog lamps often had yellow bulbs and vertical fluted glass. You can still find them in boxes of old car parts at Boot sales,in fact somewhere I still have an old fog lamp complete with yellow bulb. I can honestly say I haven't seen one UK vehicle sporting yellow headlamps in my travels for years and years.....starider
