Right as some of you may by now know this morning I went on a road trip to pick up my 1967 Triumph (not a DAF) 1300. Which I am very happy with and enjoyed the drive thouroughly.
The Good Points. 1. Drives Beuatifully 2. Brakes are good and possitive. 3. Engine was rebuilt 20000 miles ago and is sweet and quiet. 4. Seats are excellent. 5. lots of other things i cant be bothered to write ;D
The Not So Good Points. 1. 2 months MOT 2. Needs a fair bit of work but is on the whole very solid. 3. paint work is a bit tatty.
Short Term Jobs (8 weeks) 1. Weld sills inner on passenger side and inner and outer on drivers side. Plates needed on the bottom of both. 2. Weld rear wheel arch lots of new metal needed and smaller patches in other arches. 3. Realign then repair or replace steering wheel (chunk missing) 4. Rebush and adjust throttle linkage.
Long Term. 1. Strip and french polish peeling door caps 2. Adjust trim to eleminate rattles 3. Replace carpets. 4. Tidy up engine and bay appearance wize. 5. General paintwork tidy.
Looks like a fair bit too be getting on with but I feel achievable although I will have to work hard as my DAF will need some work done on it too.
Upon returning to Coventry I will get some pics of it at the old Tiumph plant in Canley. General pics will appear when I find the camera leed ;D

Well, no prizes for guesing where my vote went on the name but probably best to drive it a bot before you decide to work out if it's a he or a she. You can always tell by how unreasnably stroppy it is and how much you end up wanting to swear at it

As my sig now says the 55 has gone on to pausteurs new a local restoration company has decided to take the car on. This comes as a relief as it was beyond my skills. As for naming it a car must work before it gets named. Gladys will not be unloved and I feel with another car to drive I will be more willing to do jobs that imobilise her.

Hmm, I would do jobs to Gladys to make her more mobile, not less ;D If you want to make her less mobile I have some tips from the grinding clubhouse for you! P.S. What was the 'suggested' name that the poll eludes to?

It's not like the 55 is a real Daf anyway - just a Renault 5 automatic* really. ;D Why would anyone waste time on one of those when they have one of the last pieces of groundbreaking British car making to play with * with under-engineered driveshafts

From those pictures it looks like the inner wings may not need welding. Get them cleaned off properly and see how much metal is left before you start cutting - it's pretty thick steel on these so you may get away with cleaning, rust-treating and painting. Similarly, the rsut on the flange underneath will almost ceratinly just need brushing, rust treating and underseal. While you're at it, wire-brush and reseal the rest of the floor. It's a messy job but much nicer (and easier) than trying to plate it in a year or two. The rear jacking points / sill ends look a little nasty but they're one of the known points on these and are easier to sort than the front ones - at least you don't have to cut the bottom of the wings off to do them ;D Your steering wheel is upside-down, by the way - the bar is supposed to be below centre in the "straight ahead" position. Pop the horn bar off carefully - it's held by plastic pegs pushed into steel clips so work them out a little at a time - disconnect the splined joint above the steering rack - it'll be a pig to undo but it will with a little effort - turn the wheel 180 degrees and reconnect. That way's a lot easier than removing the wheel from the column! Finally, pop the horn bar back on the right way up. It'll also move the broken bit away from your normal grip position until you can find a replacement. Overall, looks like a good 'un

I have wondered for a while how easy it would be to make a 4wd one of these using parts off an old Dolomite.
That could be something to try. However I'd start on that mental wiring underneath the steering column. Looks like the previous owner had shares in Scotchlock or something!

A lot of that was loose wires not connected to nowt. Airiel cable will be handy for the DAF though. Have tidied it a bit and checked it was safe. And got the heater fan and fag lighter socket working. Some black insulation tape to collect it all and then stick it to the back of the dash is on the cards.
A one of 4wd drive version was made by the factory for the purpose of rally cross. As the toledo is basicly this car but rwd I would think it possible

4wd was also one of the planned options - hence the tunnel in the floorpan.
Along with overdrive, which would have been more than useful. At 70mph these are doing about 4400rpm which is a little higher than needed - the engine's power curve is almost flat between about 3000 and 5500 so dropping 1k revs shouldn't be a problem. The plans for that were to build it into the flywheel which unfortunately means there's no real way to implement it as a modification unless you have some seriously heavy-duty machining capability.

Looks like a lot of car for the money, well bought. Am I right in thinking that this model went from rear wheel drive to front wheel drive and then back to rear wheel drive (or is that another Triumph) the only car to have done that? And Joe, what's wrong with the Renault 5?!! I shan't post any more pictures of my project GTT then!

Not quite. It started as front wheel drive then changed to rear when it became the Toledo and Dolomite. Because the shell could accept a propshaftit was cheaper and easier to do that than to update the peculiar FWD gearbox for higher ratios and higher power. Still the only production car to have changed from front to rear though As for the R5, I haven't got anything against it (I learnt to drive as a 14yr old off-road in a 4) except that it's French and not wine, cheese or female. It's therefore worthy of (in fact, requires) ridicule from all Englishmen everywhere

Don't worry Joe, I'm not (too) upset!! I do find it odd though, that we're all Daf fans here, we like our cheeky small cars. I post photos of my Rover and it goes down really well. Then whenever there's a mention of the 5, nobody is interested Oh well, it's true I suppose, 'one man's horse poo is another man's manure!' ;D

No no Mr grinder, you have a fan here, besides it uses a similar dodgy engine to the dafs, i love old Renos, just dislike new ones.
Paul is the 8th picture a bomb?
i like the colour and interior

Thanks Paul. I might even post some pictures on here, trouble is it gets so dark in the workshop (even with the shutter up which is avoided in this cold weather) as the strip lights above it need replacing and we don't have access to the forklift any more! Anyway, I'm impressed with the Triumph (other) Paul. I really do want to make it to Princethorp this year. Can you clone yourself so that you can take both cars?!! ;D

Make it to Cars in The Park instead (or as well) - if Pauls doesn't get Bruce( ) there then at least Sheila will be attending along with Betty and HopelessCase

Paul is the 8th picture a bomb? "Cut the grey wire! No, wait, not the grey, the grey! Or is it the grey???" Sadly, judging from Sheila when I got her, that seems to be normal Adam Of Port Talbot wiring. And he's a mechanic

I could quite easily get both cars to Princethorpe its only 5 miles down the road. A lot of that was spare wires. The grey wire for instance was an airiel cable that was disconected and is now in Gladys. As for the rest it looks like dodgy wiring to the fag lighter and oil pressure gauge. Both of which will be sorted fast.

I like all cars that you basically don't see any more. They're all of interest, even if it is just for that reason. I wouldn't mind an early Mk1 Renault 5 if I'm honest. Hell, I've even been looking at Renault 4 vans that seem to be plentiful and occasionally cheap.
And I'd like one even more if it was full of cheese.
Or wine.
Or women.

Clean the rust out well and fibreglass it - it's completely non-structural and plastic won't rust again in future
