i must admit there has been plenty of time where i have thought about parting company with Van Dornes finest and getting an all agro, i used to have a harvest gold 3 door1300 which i would have kept if the rust had not killed it, plus a morris 1800, sadly i have no pictures of either

I've got a nice Allegro if you want it, Paul! I don't think the other Paul from the Allegro Club is ever going to collect it....let alone pay for the bloomin' thing!

Even though I still dont get the joke and that this car doesn't whinge and complain all the time it must be a man so by popular demand please raise your hypothetical glasses to Bruce.
On a slight tangent I randomly found a triumph specialist yesterday and very impressed they where too.
Paul
p.s my steering feels like its got gravel in it there is next to no play in the rack and its responsive and sharp it just feels rough when you turn the wheel like there dirt between two mating surfaces any ideas. This is new it wasn't doing it untill I drove over a rather muddy patch of road i blame the farmers.

Welcome Bruce ;D The joke, btw, is that (in slightly less PC times) it was widely known that every Aussie male was called Bruce and every Aussie female was called Sheila. Cultural stereotyping, maybe, but it was also widely known that the Aussies had no culture, so that was OK ;D Both were, of course, tough as old boots - like these cars - so they're fitting names for a pair of them

hi paul.
you may have picked up some grit in the rack, especially of the outer seal is a bit iffy. check the ball joints and trackrod ends and wd40 the steering column. also grease the rack as it may just be dry. if this does not work, you may have to strip and clean the rack. it is an easy job and the bush can be checked at the same time.
let us know.

Another one to check on these cars is the universal joint at the base of the column. They're ideally placed to pick up crud. Also, as Paul44 has said, check the rack - it's got gaiters on each end which can split (and are an MOT fail if the do). GT6 ones will fit as replacements but you need to cut a little bit off the "wide" end to fit them because the 1300's rack body is a little wider.

Decided to attack this one today done about 2 hours on it and have discovered some really good news. After a bit of wire brush action on the inner wings Ive discovered a badly reacted filler layer with underseal on it. Underneath it is good strong clean steel. There is a small hole that will need a patch but nothing anywhere near as scary as it looked like. The same story is true of the passenger side. This will be a bit more work as the filler that someone has attempted to weld through has not bonded properly to the suspension strut in places. So this will come off be cleaned up and then replaced. The good news is that there is hardly any new metal needed there. Sills will be repaired tomorrow and have been cleaned up and are again solid underneath so should give a good mating surface. That just leaves the rear wheel arch.

MWHAHAHAHAHAHA FILLEEERRRR and mesh wins again. Today I started tackling the rear wheel arch. I decided as temporary affair that mesh and filler was the order of the day when my welder ran out of gas and then wire and I ran out of steel. I looked at the area and decided if it hadn't made the car split in 2 as it was it was hardly going to do so with the filler. I must express this is temporary and when complete should be able to pass the MOT giving me time to take it out and do it properly. Anyway this is what I started with and this is where it is now. sanding and spraying tomorrow and with some luck it will look a lot better

I bet you'll need a bit of welding here and there...
Have you attached the outer sill properly yet?

Tomorrows job is to finish the outer sill I got all the way to the front of the rear door then ran out of gas and wire. Its going to need a lot of grinding and filler to hide my atrocious welding lol.

NOT FAIR ive broken my welder again This is not funny I have an MOT next week and the car is nowhere near ready and now my welders broken. Hmm what would the AA book tell me to do. FILLEERRR. I think not too many structural areas for that kind of bodge. where did that image come from that might be a good idea idea ;( Mr Grumpy has now left the building. Paul p.s. gritty noise sourced and eliminated it was grit between the steering wheel and column

Done about 7 hours of body work today. Result sill caps closed, inner sill replaced in several places, arch area rebuilt and floor plan deholed. Thats a good 2/3 of the work to be done . I will put some before and after photos on tomorrow. On taking the sill skin off I discovered that the rot was a lot worse than first thought. The sill strenghener was shot, and the inner sill needed to be replaced in several places. Now all done . The main problem seemed to finding some steel thick enough to weld to as it is now so thin, welder was just blowing holes in it. Other side doesn't look as bad but we shall see when i take the skin off. Inner wings will be the last job apart from fabricating a battery tray and then its MOT time Wish me luck ;D Paul

Haha the journey home has put me in a bad mood 3 roads shut. Wiper blade gets caught in a plastic bag flies of and cracks the windscreen of the car behind and it was a nice original chrome one too On the bright side fuel consumption seems to have recovered 300 odd miles of £25 thats about 22l that doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

Wow, enlighten us Paul, how did you get it from just over 10 mpg to 62mpg?

Obviously downhill all the way, and sealing off that front wing has done wonders for the aerodynamics!
I've got a great way to stop worrying about fuel consumption. I always put £20 in at a time, and that never seems to change! I'm paying the same as I did in 1988!!! Brilliant.
Who says Bristolians ain't clever?

I think the difference would be such. Its had new fuel lines, a decent service, had the big holes sealed and because of the traffic jams rarely got above 50mph on the way. Not doing 70 or even 60 seems to make a huge difference. I also wonder just how good the fuel gauge is and whether its just going to plumit in about 5 miles. If so that may explain why I got such a bad reading in the first place

I know the Government and the Greenies point out the advantages of driving at around 50 mph, which sadly isn't that practical on motorways as you get shunted along with everything else, but the increase in MPG can be quite startling. The joys of not being in a rush!
My Astro van, for instance, even being a 4.3 litre can do 30mpg+ on a decent run sticking to 55 or so MPH, and even touring in a 2.3 litre Saab can bring home over 40. I simply try and enjoy my motoring and if there's very little traffic you can take things easier.
My Dolomite, even as a 1500, was quite out of breath at above 60 so I always used to keep to lower speeds.
And as for fuel gauges, they are never that reliable - I park my Saab with it's backside pointing downhill, so even when it's nearly empty it reads 1/4 full first thing in the morning. I can lose a 1/4 of a tank in the Astro by simply pulling away quickly from a set of lights, and gain about the same by braking quite heavily!
My dad's 33 used to run out of fuel at about an indicated 1/3 of a tank, but always seemed to run out within pushing distance of a garage, which was pretty damn lucky when you think about it!
Gauges - don't you just love 'em?!!

Hi again Photos as promised at least if the stupid internet will let me upload the ruddy things. You will remember im sure the view of the rear of the sill this is what it looks like now. those who have seen the car will remember how badly the sill was attached this is how it looks now The front of the sill viewing from the wheel arch had no endplate and no bracing of any kind. this is it now all nicely sealed even if the rot in the floorpan presented a small problem. . That compiles all the work done on Saturday the filler was today. Today I pulled the carpet to discover this, looks good on the passenger side but with some rot in the driver footwell. test fitted the new carpet I got for it needs a clean but otherwise looks good. The work that remains. Drivers side inner wing Passengers side inner wing Passenger side sill thankfully looks a lot more solid than the drivers did. Replace rotoflex bushes and sort out the oil leak that has developed. Interesting any ideas where thats coming from as it wasn't like it when I got it. Then MOT and general tidying. The drivers side sill will need more work but at the moment will pass oh and I suppose I better sought the infernal continually breaking speedo out really the rear wheel arch now has paint on it Paul

Unfortunately, I've had to turn pics off for now cos of connection (lack of) speed issues. 3UK promise me they're on the case though, and have given me a free 1Gb of data to (be unable to) use in the meantime

More playing today and no Gladys is not being negleted she is just behaving at the moment.
All the work done on weekend has been filled sanded filled again sanded again and is now in primer ready to be sanded down and filled again cause its still not quite perfect ;D.
Went to tackle getting the rest of the carpet out today but was scuppered by seized runner on the front seats. All the carpet I have taken out has relieved some nice sound floor.
I also decided to tackle the electrics today and found 1/2 mile of loose and unnecsary cabling. The decidely ropy looking demister has been removed. The miles of radio cabling running under the carpet has been removed. The cigarette lighter, oil pressure gauge and clock are now secure and there wiring neatly wrapped into looms.
I am truly shocked by the state of wiring in this car it was just a big fire waiting to happen. Come on miles of loose cables with bare wires showing, and none of it secured in anyway. Even my 2 year old godson would know you dont do that!

OMG i can belive that that car has not folded up, Nylo isnt even that bad and shes been of the road for 10 years, paul if i was you i would take it off the road and fully rebuild it, where is the sill??? your a braver man than me, its taken me two days to do one patch on nylo and that has used two rolls of wire at £12 each
sorry i dont want to put you off. but if you have an accident in that it would fold up. imho you should only replace metal with metal and fill dents
you could always buy a nice 46 as an every day runner with MOT until october ;D

Im closing the sill off at the weekend. I replaced near enough all the metal in the drivers side sill last weekend. The filler you can see running along the sill and around the arch is only there to smooth over the seem weld. There is solid metal underneath it. The area at the back of the wheelarch will be be plated this week as well. The weekend will see passenger side sill and inner wings done. Then the rest of the body is pretty solid
I forgot to say im on my 4th roll of wire and 3rd bottle of gas
