You should be so lucky! In the early eighties we had a MkIII Cortina 1300L, it used to shoot Rizlas out of the air vents by the windscreen at irregular intervals, and down the back of the back seat we found theee most disgusting baby's bib, with most of it's last meal still attached - fossilized. This one. (Just working on another birthday card)

On closer inspection it isn't a rolex. Might have said so on the back plate but that rubbed of to reveal sekonda underneath oh well cant win em all. The £50 will be handy though. I can call it compensation for not having done the welding that was promised in the sale. Although saying that im kind of glad he didn't I have a feeling he would have just boxed in the rust and neglected to mention it

Paul/Onne,
I'm still trying to get batteries for my Rolex - I can't seem to get them anywhere.
Is this the sort of thing you can help me with?
Many thanks,
Howard

Talking of things that begin with "R" and end in "X", and as we are on a small-car forum, does anyone remember the Rolux???
Now THAT'S a small car!

what a surprise Paul that it wasn't a Rolex! Make sure the £50 note is not a disguised 50 pence piece will you! Still photo of the watch please, might still be interesting. Oh and how can rolex be rubbed off to reveal Sekonda? Surely it is either etched in on the back? And neither are that easy to open to do that on the face. Howard, surely that shouldn't be too difficult?

It looked like it was etched in but a quick rub saw it gone. I know nothing of old watches. I hadn't even noticed the branding on the face and clasp. A pretty poor attempt at a fake but still a nice looking watch. I will put a photo up later today if photophecket decides to let me. Im thinking of going back to flickr it may be slower and more fiddly but at least it works

Nooooo!!!! Please no photos of Sekondas! As a watchmaker with a very dodgy connection I'd rather waste my bandwidth on a Timex if I had to!!!! As for engraving rubbing off, a lot of the fakes use transfer print or "back protector" type stickers to rebrand stuff rather than engraving so the only really surprising thing is that it hadn't rubbed off before now ;D Incidentally, Howard, battery shouldn't be a problem at all for yours. The only issue is restoring water resistance if the crown or glass seals are worn. The back seal is a simple O ring but the crowns and glasses are propritetory parts which Rolex won't supply outside their dealer network. The battery can still be changed, and the water resistance tested but, if there's a seal fault on the crown or glass, then repairing it is a problem. Even though leaks on either of those genuinely aren't the fault of the battery fitter (you don't usually remove the crown or glass to do a battery!) customers never see it like that. A lot of places find it's easier to make a customer feel good (if poorer) by telling him that his specialist watch must go back to Rolex than to risk an "it wasn't leaking when I brought it in" complaint when you tell them there's a slight leak under pressure. Try explaining to an irate owner that the fact it "doesn't leak in the rain" is not the same as saying it doesn't leak with 200 atmospheres of pressure applied! There's also the slightly embarrassing point where you accept the watch in, they come back an hour later only for you to tell them that their Rolex isn't. Had that happen once with an extremely good 18kt gold replica which was a perfect, correctly serialised, imitation with a very good Swiss, but not Rolex, movement in it. Luckily he was a long-standing customer and shrugged it off with a grin but you can imagine the likely result if he didn't know us from Adam What you also find is that a lot of places run scared for fear of getting sued if they scratch the back - Rolex use a special spanner, only available to their dealers and me, to grip the knurled edge and none of the alternatives you can get are quite right on the grip pattern so occasionally they'll leave a mark

All the silver plate is now off and shows what was underneath It now doesn't look anything like a rolex but I still quite like it anyway heres a couple of pics as photobucket is behaving. It was shiny when I pulled from the car obviously being in contact with all that 40year old hessian killed the coating as it just came off my desk is covered in a silvery powder weird

Damn you! After what I just posted about my bandwith as well (currently managing around 7kbps but Three have accepted there's a network fault and are investigating).
They actually use quite a nice movement in those chronos - it's made by Miyota, who own Citizen, and is basically the same as you would have got in a Citizen before they went over to Ecodrive except for the stamping on the back-plate. All the wheels and bearings are made out of proper metal as well! In my opinion (and therefore not libel) it beats the %^&(*^£$^$ out of any of the plastic junk Seiko put in their chronos anyway ;D

Hey id already posted it when the comment came up. I just worked out that having found £50 in the car that the car is now owing me £250 which isn't bad going at all considering I rebuilt nearly half the bottom of one side of the car. At the current rate another £50 will get it through an MOT. Oh and Joe watch out im going to sneak up in the middle of the night and take a fibre glass mould of your inner wings as mine are too far gone to mould off. I then have the choice of making a fibre glass repair panel. Or if I make 2 I can use the presses at uni to make a new panel out of steel for about £20.

Please don't fibreglass the inner wings! They're absolutely vital structure on these because you not only have the top spring mounts but the wishbone bracket is bolted to them as well. So if they fail you don't just have a corner drop, it comes off completely!

Yes a fibre glass patch would be a very bad idea then. However moulding for a press would work. You can also imbue galvanised steel in the matrix to strenghen the material. But as the resin doesn't bond properly to metals I would NEVER patch using it. If youre going to fibreglass repair anything it has to be the whole panel with strengheners moulded in for mounting points.

OMG i can belive that that car has not folded up, Nylo isnt even that bad and shes been of the road for 10 years, paul if i was you i would take it off the road and fully rebuild it, where is the sill??? your a braver man than me, its taken me two days to do one patch on nylo and that has used two rolls of wire at £12 each sorry i dont want to put you off. but if you have an accident in that it would fold up. imho you should only replace metal with metal and fill dents you could always buy a nice 46 as an every day runner with MOT until october ;D I think i will keep the one ive got but I think I may no someone who wants one

Done some playing between the showers today. Copious amounts of wd40 got the seat rails and height adjustment mechanism working again. Having done that I pulled the seats out and fitted the new carpet. I was very pleased to see that the floor pan and the inner sill that I haven't replaced look absolutly rock solid, about the only thing on the car that is I might add. A small patch of welding will have to be done as I found stress cracking around the mounts for the seats. Which I believe spunkymonkey also found in his. Can I blame Adam for that . I welded the small area in the drivers footwell between the rain and that is now solid. Also found under the carpet a zippo lighter and an unopened packet of cigars. This amused me for some reason. Im afraid I have no pictures because I was rushing so that I wasn't still working (being electricuted) when it started raining again.

You can just imagine it can't you - One time owner Col. Pemberton-Oakley BSc Cambs MBE GC (Ret'd) once treated himself to a Triumph motor car - something to tinker with at weekends and go for a drive to get away from his harridan wife (3 feet across and twice as ugly). It was the only place he could safely hide away his favourite cigars (She wanted a Rover which he couldn't afford on his pension so she refused to be seen in it). So he would give it a wash then drive out into the moors and meet up with some of his old hunting friends at a quiet little pub nestling in the valley. There he could sit with convivial company, and relax for a couple of hours, smoke his cigars and read the Telegraph in peace. Possibly.

Static rear belts from just about anything should fit (top mounts are already there under the parcel shelf) or Securon do an inertia reel set where the reel can be mounted horizontally if you want those. For the fronts, the chance of finding just a buckle end which is compatible is small - they're old belts and any you find are unlikely to be in better condition than those you have. Again, inertia sets are available (actually listed for the Triumph 1300 in the securon catalogue) at about £40 a set iirc. Or watch EBay for new inertia reel sets. You want long stalk (about 300mm I think) versions because the centre mounts are so far back from the seats. They come up now & then usually a lot cheaper than from dealers, but don't be tempted by unknown 2nd hand ones - the chances are they've come out of a write-off and have already been subjected to an impact. edited to add: Rear statics are available here: cgi.ebay.co.uk/SECURON-200-REAR-LAP-DIAGONAL-SEAT-BELT-UNIVERSAL-FIT_W0QQitemZ320457996325QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item4a9cc8f825at a pretty good price (about £22.50 each posted). Don't quote me on it but I can't see any reason that a rear static belt is any different from a front static belt, except that you can't have front statics in modern cars, so they should do as front replacements as well Edited again to add: Though why anyone would want to fit rear (or front, come to that) belts to a car that you don't legally need them in is is beyond me. Not belting up is one of the best ways going to sharpen your road sense ;D
