Im a big Fan of Dafs but not yet owned one I will one day though ;D Heres Boris our Mini Automatic ill paste my thread here from elsewhere so itll appear all in one go,its all a bit past tense so please excuse the first few posts as they are a tad out of date now. I thought it was about time to introduce you to our 1995 Rover Mini Sprite Automatic Named "BORIS" Theres been lots done to Boris and if I included everything id be here all day I will most probably post quite a few updates starting in past tense back in August last year to get you up to speed then slow down a bit with updates so please bear with me We picked up Boris today from wolverhampton and drove him home the long way around to wiltshire(around 130 miles) it was only when we got home and we read the milage difference between the old and new mot that we had nearly doubled the milage it covered between the mot,s in just one day It had covered just 72 miles between the mot,s! I think it did him good but hes now got a little oil leak which is making my partner a little worried we may of done the wrong thing? We got rid of a pefectly good modern car and replaced it with one that leaks oil I think itll be ok though I think its just an oil seal or something hope it doesnt cost much to fix? I think she will be happy then, she loves the car but shes just worried which is understandable. there were a few rattles and bangs on the way home that kind of got us a bit worried,it drives ok I guess its just knowing what the rattles and bangs are? I don't think its anything serious to be honest but without knowing what they are every noise worries us Its been a long day and we took him for a little spin in the dark just now to test his lights they were fine We havnt had a chance to take any pictures of him since we got him home but heres one at the garage for now and ill post some more in the next update. This is how he looked when we got him: To Be Continued Huggz Jodie

So with Boris back home in Wiltshire we assesed what needed to be done as priority? You can see in the pictures here that his paint was a bit mismatched, there was a rust bubble on one A panel ans the other was the Wrong Shade of Red but rust free And a Close up on the Bubbly Door Skin We decided to grind down the rust bubble on the A panel and around the headlights and treat with Kurust and Red Oxide until we could make good when the weather improved so as a temporary measure around the lights went from this To this And a similar story fror the A panel rust bubble From This To this The A panal rust was nothing more than a bodged stonechip repair as there was no rust on the reverse of the damage Next step was to wait for some decent weather  And find a local Paint factors for some Custom Mixed Aerosols Thats when a Steep Learning Curve started Huggz Jodie

So now armed with lots of Advice id been given by other Mini Enthusiasts and also with an article from Martin Thaddeus that was in Practicle Classics Magazine last September I set to work First I Ground down the Rust Bubbles on the doorskins and removed the interior door panels to check out the damage from the inside. The Drivers door again appeared to just be badly rectified stonechips as there was no corrosion inside the door cavity However the Passenger door proved to have rotted from the inside out So after grinding down to good metal I treated the area with a good dose of Kurust I then cleaned all traces of rust from the inside and bridged the holes with Fibreglass from the inside and a skim of filler from the outside and several coats of Hammerite inside the door covering the repaired area when finished it looked like this Now it was ready to get all the repaired areas ready for paint First I mask then panel wipe clean and prime Then a fair bit of Flatting back until all those areas were as smooth as the preverbial Babbas Bottie Now it was time to lay on some Colour topcoat This was the first time ive tackled a job like this and I don't think I did too bad? Luckily the Paint Factors did a Fantastic Match to the paint with the Custom Mixed Aerosols Again everything was cleaned with First couple of thin coats I then had to leave it like that for a few days due to our Orrrible British Weather :x Since I have no Garage all this was done outside so I was reliant on good weather  then my skills started to improve I was really pleased with the finish considering this was my first attemp at anything like this and considering it was acheived using aerosols It was then left as you see it I removed the tape screwed all the trim back on and drove him around like that for several weeks to let the paint fully harden so I could flat it back again and compound it More about that next time  Huggz Jodie

Next job whilst waiting for the paint to harden was to rub down, rustproof, stone chip, and topcoat the front and rear valances They were in pretty good shape so decided to protect them before they got any worse First Kurust Then Red Oxide Then Stonechip Then Finally Topcoat Finished article I repeated the Same Process for the rear Valance too to when I tried to get the rear foglamp off I found half the bracket had crumbled and half refused to budge I Finally removed it with a dremel,a hammer and some brute force!!! I was going to replace just the bracket at £10 from a mini specialists when I spotted they did a whole new aftermarket lamp for just £4 as I also discovered the original lamps wiring and bulb holder was very corroded it was a "No Brainer" to keep it so I replaced it the bracket on it was designed to hang from a horizontal surface like a bumper bracket but I just angled it and used a different size bolt and mounted it in one one the holes the original was mounted in and then plugged the unused hole with a little p40 fibreglass paste After I got the paint to the stage you see it in the previous post piccys I then waited around 3 weeks before flatting down the paint to a smooth but dull finish using 1500 then 2000 grade Wet N Dry Finishing Papers it then looked like this I then set about trying to compound a door by hand I had an agreement with my partner that She would buy me an Electric Buffer if I could prove I could achieve a decent shine using this Miracle Cutting compound id raved on about as she wasnt convinced Anyhow I managed to Convince her and after copious ammounts of Farecla G3 and lots n lots of water the results were as Follows: i187.photobucket.com/albums/x317/its_a_girlthing/DSCF1194.jpg[/img] I then Compounded the whole car Old and New Paint to try to tie everything in And voila it was finished well at least until I can give him a full Respray Huggz Jodie

I decided to just post a sumary of what happened since the last post rather than post lots of individual posts Tyres The Original Tyres though still had legal tread but were showing signs of the tirewalls cracking so they were replaced Before we replaced them I painted the standard rims with some Black Smooth Hammerite so I didnt get paint on the new tyres Old Tyres ATS Report of Old Tyres Nice New Tyres My partner is very fussy about Tyres it doesnt necessarily have to be the most expensive brand name but shes not keen on Budget Tyres either,we chose Falken Sincera 828,s not the dearest but not a Budget Tyres either and well used and respected on the Mini Scene I then tidied up and Refurbed the Original Plastic Wheeltrims they were badly kurbed but responded well to a good sanding down with 80 grade Glasspaper to remove the deep scratches then a smoothing down with Wet N Dry before Spraying with Plastic Primer Then standard grey primer Before changing the colour from Silver to non original Old English White Here they are on Boris Brakes One day while Driving to pick my Other Half up from Work the brakes went (quite Literally) We hobbled to ATS who diagnosed that the pads had disintergrated and the disks scored n warped Boris had been standing for about a year when we bought him and though they were new when layed up he had led a sheltered life so upon starting to use him for longer journeys everything started Meltdown including the brakes They Fitted New Disks,Pads and Bled the system and they were fabb for around a month Then on the way to a Mini Show thy started to go again We had a friend look at Boris and he discovered we Had no Brake Fluid? We refilled the system and made it Home and the next day took him to ATS again, they said it was the master cylinder but their quote was horrendous!!! We got some better quotes and took him to a local independant garage who did a first class job fitting the Master Cylinder and much Cheaper A week later there was no Brake Fluid Again They took it back in and told us we should of asked them to find the fault rarther than asking them to replace the Master Cylinder on the diagnosis of ATS as there probably wasnt anything wrong with it afterall It turned out to be the Brake Limiter Valve and I'm happy to say after 9 months since then we havnt lost a drop of Brake Fluid At the time we were very Angry having to pay for a part we didnt need but with hindsight and advice weve since been told with a new Limiter valve with 100% Pressure the old Master Cylinder Seals would of failed sooner or later anyhow so we are glad we have a brand new braking system now And look at the nice shiny Bits Battery and ECU How much does a battery for a mini cost? £200!!!!!!!! Well it does if you go to ATS!!!! This Visit to ATS was after a good n happy relationship our last!! His battery was on his last legs so we called into ATS they quoted us £60 we were happily left the car with them and they said pick it up in an hour. When we went back to collect him one of their Donuts had Removed the battery without a backup Power source to keep the ECU,s Code and the car refused to start To Cut a Very Long Story Short we missed a Mini Run we had planned for a year,Boris stayed at ATS for Two Weeks and we had to pay an additional £140 to an independant Auto Locksmith to Get to ECU to talk to the Car Again!!! Trading Standards were useless refusing to get involved as we thought ATS should foot the Bill for Incompitance,we drove the car in and they didnt make provision to keep the ECU powered up to keep the Code and blamed us for not having a Cigerette Lighter Socket to power their Power Saver gadget :x In the End we had to put it down to experience they knew and we knew it would cost us more than £140 in Legal Fees to get our £140 back! Moral of the story These Autocentres don't have a clue don't take your prized Classic to any of them really as they are all just as bad as one another! Finally Wheels N Tyres Again!! We soon Got Bored with Standard Rims so swopped the standards for these tasty beauties back in March this year They are Satin Black Ultralite Alloys with a Colour Coded Pinstripe Wrapped up in Lushous Yokohama A539 Rubber Boris handles soo much better on these than his standard Skinny Steels they had 145x12 tyres these Ultralights are wrapped up in 165x12 Yokos Lights Hes Also had his old Candlelight Sealed Beam Units Consigned to the Dustbin and Now has a Wipac Halogen Light Conversion From This To this And heres how hes looking today(ish) that was a couple of months ago and hes nearly due an MOT now and hes looking a bit tired around the edges Hes still very Solid though and will be getting a Proper Makeover once the show seasons over Huggz Jodie

About a week ago I suddenly got a burst of enthusiasm and decided to clean up the interior floorpan on Boris  The later Minis had a Horrible Bitumen Based Sound Deadning welded to the Floorpan with some nasty adhesive When it gets old it tends to crack and can let moisture get trapped between the Sound Deadning and the Floorpan and as its fitted before the top colour coat is applied at the Factory theres just primer underneath the Deadning  So Armed with Specialist tools ( A Biggggg Hammer and a Large Flat Bladed Screwdriver I decided to strip it all off and Rustproof and Paint the Floorpan properly So first the Floor looking a little like this Then after some Serious Chipping away over several days it got to this kind of stage Then after a good sweep up it looked like this And this is what I removed from Boris This little lot weighed around 14lbs in weight  Then once at this stage on the whole of the Floorpan both Front and Rear the floor was sanded to give a good key and degreased with Panel Whipe Then Painted with Hammerite No1 Rust Beater as an Undercoat Then Looked like this: You can just see in the photo The Bigg Hammer And Screwdriver I used to remove all that Orrible Stuff Theres a Rear Loom that runs through a channel in the floor,i had to move that out of the way whilst I painted that one channel in Topcoat then pushed the loom back into it  Then I Painted the rest of the Floor in Topcoat which was Smooth Red Hammerite,it then looked like this: The Red isnt quite right but near enough as its under the carpet and as Boris needs a little welding in the future it will be done again in the Correct Red Its good enough for now and all the surface rust has been sorted and the floor is nice and clean and will be easier to repaint after the welding has been done It was a terrible job to do in the scorching heat last Week The paint dried too quickly but at least its now done Even though all that Sound Deadning has now gone the Noise Levels in Boris don't seem to have Changed :? Maybe my paint is just as thick as the Original Sound Deadning  Who Knows ? Just Glad that Jobs over for now Huggz Jodie

Well weve finally gone and done it Boris is Currently Under A Specialist Getting a New Gearbox
Hes due Both Tax and an MOT Tax isnt a problem we are getting that next week and we were supposed to be getting the MOT done next week or so but thats been put on Hold. The Mot isnt due for a month anyhows but today we had arranged for one of our club members to give Boris a Pre MOT Check Over then we had a little unexpected complication
We tried to move him from his parking space and he wouldnt Reverse We eventually got him to Reverse and went off for his check up
we then tried to get him to Reverse but by this point things had got worse and Now Poor Boris had lost Reverse Altogether
So after getting lost a bit and a Long Drive between Wiltshire and Northamptonshire (forward gears still working just) Boris is now in the capable Hands of MRA MINIS and we will be getting a new gearbox
So No More Slipping Gears
We will keep you posted

Well Today Boris Finally Landed Back in Deepest Darkest Wiltshire after having Gearbox Surgery at MRA MINIS ;D he arrived back on a trailer as though he was drivable his Tax and MOT had expired while away I was missing Boris terribly but my Sadness turned to Happiness once I Saw Little Boris again Then Panic Set in as Martin couldnt get him started But all it turned out to be was Boris was Outta Petrol To be fair we had Delivered him to Martin with very Little and Martin had been on a little test drive too so there was diddly Squat left in his tank A Quick Squirt of easy start into the Throttle Body and Hey Presto He Spung into life Next thing was Martin Couldnt get him off the trailer, well he did but it wasnt easy as somebody had nicked his ramps Eventually after a bit of Messing about Boris Rolled off the Trailer (litterally) Because his MOT has Run Out i couldnt drive him on the road But as Boris was delivered to a nearby Unit the site has a Modest tarmac Area where I could try him out He seems really Smooth and his idle has been sorted out now too but until ive driven him further I cannot tell you more Boris is Booked in for an MOT on Friday so ill let you know how his first proper Voyage goes with his New Gearbox Huggz Jodie

Sep 30 2009, 08:19 PM Boris Wouldnt start again on Monday In fact he broke down when i went to pick up my Partner from Work He drove there Fine then refused to restart We rang the AA they came out and Boris started again  However the AA guy told us he never did anything its just coincidence though from the sounds of things he said he thought it was Fuel Pump Related :dontgetit: We went through a few ideas trying Relays, and even trying another known working Engine Management Relay Pack but he still wouldnt start we had noted we couldnt hear the fuel pump priming so we thought we had found the problem So today we went to Somerford Mini and got a Non Genuine Pump as it was much cheaper than the genuine one First the tank was removed followed by removing the Pump itself Ive been dreading the tank comming out incase there was a nasty rusty suprize under the tank but thankfully the boot floor was perfect under the tank  we then realised the replacement pump was much smaller than the original However with a few adaptions it fitted and appeared to work fine  We did find though the pump makes a noise all the time which kind of drives you batty Though it does work well enough, only thing is after fitting the new pump it later refused to start again :dontgetit: After lots of head scratching and testing wiring with a test bulb we eventually found the fault it appears either the Inertia Switch or its Wiring is faulty? So it appears the Fuel pump wasnt at fault after all. To be honest everything pointed to a faulty Fuel Pump and the way i look at it we could put the Original Pump back if we wished and we now have a spare too  Boris got a Prezzie today a nice New Shiny Exhaust This is what was left of his original The back box was fine apart from a little surface rust but the pipe going into the centre box wasnt even joined to the centre box the weld had broken all the way around :- All that was holding the two bits together was the rubber exhaust hanger  Out with the Old and tomorow ill post an update of Whats hanging under Boris now Until then heres what the Pathetic Remains of The Peashooter sounded like just before it was removed  :errr: More Tommorow Watch This Space Huggz Jodie

Oct 1 2009, 06:11 PM Sorry Guys i did promise an update so an update you shall have just not the update id hoped for Yup Boris now has a Shiny New Maniflow Centre Exit Twin Box DTM :w00t: I had hoped to get a decent little vid for you all but for some reason it never picked up the sound So heres a piccy of the type i got and maybe tommorow ill have a go at taking a piccy and a video of it Boris looks and Sounds Well Sexy with it On :w00t:  The Fuel Pump Well its now been substuted for the original again as the replacement non genuine one drove us Mad >_< It was very noisey indeed but when we realised it was the Inetia Switch we had the old one put bnack in  So the originals back in and quieter though still makes a noise just not as bad Maybe it always did we just never noticed it? Answers on a postcard to seriously if anybody has an SPI with a genuine Fuel Pump do they make a noise all the time? As i said though its not as bad as the replacement and once the engines running you cant notice it the replacement you could hear above the engine noise Ill try and post some piccys of Boris with his New Zaust and maybe a Little Vid too Watch This Space Huggz Jodie

Right Bang up to date now The New Exhaust was fitted the very next day and we've had it a few months now Heres how Boris Looks these days Yes hes got a dent in the Bumper We call it Character ;D Yesterday as in Yesterday 4th January 2010 we bought this We've been meaning to do another little video of how he now sounds but today we fitted the new K&N so thought we would video him with both the New Exhaust and the New Air Filter We chose the Replacement Filter Element as opposed to the pancake type filter as its uses the standard Airbox so the Engine bay looks standard They don't recommend the Pancake type for Autos anyway I have to say its made a huge difference Boris became more Responsive after the Maniflow Exhaust but that K&N Element has taken it to another level Enjoy Huggz Jodie

Well its been 18 months since we first bought Boris And theres been Many up and Downs and we have come a long way with him We had lots of Plans for him we wanted to do last year but Failing brakes,Failing Automatic Gearbox amoungst other things put paid to his Bodywork plans and everything was put on hold We tidied up his Bodywork with Rattle cans and protected the bodywork and slowed down the rust  But 18 Months on hes starting to look tired now as can be seen here Passengers Side Door and A Panel Drivers Door Drivers Side A Panel No Rust but a very Poor Patern Panel Fit Nearside Front Wing Passengers Side Doorstep To be honest though Boris is on the whole a Very Solid Little Mini  The Wing can be ground back to sound metal, the Door Step had a tiny little hole in it just big enough to push a pencil through As i couldnt Weld i ground it back, treated it and Fibreglassed it and its never gone any worse  He also has Oversills which ive never liked  Confession Time A few months ago i cleaned the floorpans inside the car and treated them to red oxide and top coat  Go back a few pages and you will see the results However i did a bit of sneaky fibreglassing :- the Oversills could be seen through a few holes in the inner sills and inside the sills was looking very clean  Not wanting the closed in Oversills to fill up if i got in with wet feet i closed up the holes  this is what the holes looked like And theres a Couple in the Rear Bins too  And The Engine Bay is Filthy Well Tommorow Boris is comming off the road for a while for Inner Sill Repairs,New Correct Outer Sills,New Door Skins,New A panels and all the other minor little repairs needed  Once all the metalwork is Sound and Solid he will be getting a Full Body 2k respray in the Original Flame Red  And the Engine bay will be getting a Makeover too A lot of the trim will be getting changed too for nice new Shiny Stuff All New Rubber Seals plus we are changing the horrible Front and Rear screen locking strips that have lost all their colour for nice black ones  And these Graphics will be gone forever too but will be replaced with Something much Nicer at a later Date  I think its high time some of the trim was replaced as its trying to escape  Ill post more pics as i have them once poor Boris has been Stripped Down Watch This Space..................... I've come across people who re-create stickers and transfers these days. Years ago I remember buying a set of "City" stickers for my brother's 1973 Mini over the counter at the local Austin Rover dealer - incorrect of course, but it looked very smart in them.
I love it that British Motor Heritage are still making Mini body panels (even for the van) - just a shame that as far as I've asked - no one thought to provide a home for the A+ engine presses/moulds. Reading around, there are plenty of folk out there who'd love to re-manufacture themselves a brand new Mini.

Great report, and brings back fond memories of the missus Mini Mayfair that we had 17 years ago. Lot's of fun and lots of maintenance all at the same time, including the dreaded sub-frame replacement! I see you're quite happy to get your hands dirty with bodywork, so when you do take the plunge into Daf ownership you'll be fine!! I see you mention that you don't weld (me neither), necessity is the mother of invention as they say, I'm sure it's a string you'll add to your bow when you get into Dafs! ;D

Inner Sill was then painted in a Bitumen Based Paint Next the Outer "Correct" type Sill was Fitted Now theres no Rusty Holes inside or in the rear bins either I could Bore you with the other side but we basically did the same steps on the Drivers Side Next after the Engine Ancillaries were removed i was faced with this Dirty Engine Block And the Back of the Engine was even worse That Engine isn't Black its actually Red!!!! And Heres the Proof and the front I spent a whole day Degreasing it with 3in1 Heavy Duty Citrus Degreaser using those kitchen sponge type scourers and toothbrushes I also Tried Gunk but found it Useless Id highly Recommend the 3in1 Degreaser I then Painted the block with Moss EP3a "Mini Engine Green" Engine Enamel And the Back too Ive still got to paint the Thermostat Housing,Coil, and Rocker Cover but they are getting done in the same colour but in spray can form for a smoother finish Huggz Jodie

Well the Engine Bay Refurb is pretty much finished Painted a few Ancillaries to brighten things up Rad and Alternator Brackets Rocker Cover And cleaned up the Rocker Cover Bolts Before on the Left/After on the Right Replaced the Rubber Seals Too Old on Left/New on Right Old ones were in a Shocking State Also Repainted the Coil but don't have a Photo of that Painted the Shabby old Alternator And Stripped the Black Paint from the Top of the Radiator to reveal the Shiny Brass Everything was then refitted to the Engine Bay along with new Distributor Cap,Rotor Arm,Oil Filler Cap,Fan belt,Thermostat and we will be Changing the Plugs too It Now looks like this Just needs Air Filter Box fitting and a splash of Auto Glym Rubber and Plastic Polish to make all the Pipes and Plastic parts look nice and fresh While prepping the car we discovered a little more Rust in the Front Wings However it was Confined to the Headlamp area and the Wings were Rust free apart from these areas Offside Wing Nearside Wing As both wings were very sound apart from these tiny holes the metal was ground back to clean metal and tiny plates welded in place and a skim of filler to level the surface Nearside Wing Welded and Filled And Offside You may notice that the Grille Screw holes have been welded and filled too We are fitting Grille Buttons instead We were a bit surprised when they Arrived though as they are Branded "Speedwell" I thought Speedwell Stopped Trading Wayy Back !!!! Boris has now Been flatted back as Much as he can be,only things left to do is treat the minor rust bubbling thats been ground back with Jelonite and Rustproof behind the Wing Repairs then Boris can be Primed ready for his New Shiny Flame Red Topcoat of Paint Hopefully this is the last Photo of Boris Like this? Next One he will be covered in Grey Primer

I did say i wouldn't do another update until he was back together but decided to do a little Update We have spent the last couple of days Wet Flatting all the Shine off our Lovely New Paint with 2000 and then 2500 grade Wet and Dry paper with lots of soapy water We Must Be Mad Boris Currently Looks like this: And this is how his Shiny Roof looks now And heres the Scuttle Half Wet Flatted to give a Comparison I have to admit its really hard taking Sandpaper to Fresh Shiny Paint and Sanding it dull However once the Electric Polisher, plenty of water and a little Farecla G3 goes to work believe you me it will be like a mirror Apart from that ive spent today Flatting down,Priming and Top Coating the Rear Number Plate Light Housing,Wiper Arms and Grille Centre with Satin Black Hopefully we will be Buffing and possibly Sealing with a coat of polish Tomorrow Huggz Jodie

hi.
i have been througha number of minis in the past and always liked them. the biggest problem was trying to do anything in the engine bay as there is just no room at all.
at the minute i have a 1970 Morris 1100 which is basically the same as the mini but bigger. same mechanics, more space. what more could you want.
all of the old BMC stuff is totally bombproof and will run forever on minimal maintenance.
after the work you have done on that mini, a daf will present no real problems when you decide to get one.
nice work.

All that dulling down the fresh paint with wet and dry worked out ok then! I've never understood that myself but then again I don't have the keen eye of a painter to tell the difference. She certainly looks nice and shiny!

I've kept off this thread so far cos I'm jealous of the car and the availability of a spray bay but that's an outstanding result. I'm now too impressed to remain jealous ;D Pete, the reason for flatting paint back can be seen if you look at the corners of the roof in the freshly sprayed (right) and flatted / polished (left) bits here: Th efresh paint will inevitably (well, almost inevitably) have a slight "orange peel" effect (wrinkled finish) which mainly shows up where you have bright, straight, edges like the spray-bay lights reflected in it at a low angle (ie: looking "along" the panel. Flatting removes or greatly reduces that effect and gives a much "crisper" reflection from all angles. It's a lot of work but adds that final zing to the finish. Don't try it on part repaints though because the original paint almost certainly wasn't treated to that much care in the factory and a well-flatted area can look just as out of place as a colour mis-match beside factory paint ;D
