All wired up now, complete with beeper for the indicators, and tested with an empty trailer: Wasn't really any extra load on her but she seems to pull nice and neatly, with the trailer bouncing noticeably less than on Sheila. It's also a lot easier to reverse with her shorter wheelbase!

Towbars are available fro anything of that age, Ken. They sometimes come in kit-form consisting of a length of angle iron, a tow-ball and some bolts (you supply the hacksaw, welder and drills) but that's part of the fun - anything pre-type-approval can still have home-made ones fitted because you can't have type-approved accessories for a non-type-approved cars I only bought the "Van" version for Betty because it didn't work out all that much more expensive than buying the bits in locally by the time you added the electrics etc and I had no idea what the official mounting points were so it was easier to see their plans. Plus, paying out cash for the kit made it far more likely that I'd actually get round to fitting it

At Sian's suggestion about a year ago, I spent this afternoon slightly chavving Betty: But, they're not just any halogen spots, they're ice blue halogen spots..... ;D So that's 210w of lighting on high beam, plus 45w per channel stereo, all running off a 6v battery and dynamo. Maybe I should add jump leads to her toolbox..........

Don't know if this electrical advice helps, but I've just bought some 6 volt relays for "Pooh" and plan (when time allows...) to wire the lights using relays to switch the lights on and an "either or" relay for the switching between main and dipped beams. I've also bought some 6 volt halogen H4 headlights for my Daf and fitted them with "French style" yellow covers. These bulbs have the large circular fitting (as per the ordinary 45/40 watt bulbs) but have a halogen bulb. The relays will help with current losses through switching, as the dashboard switch will only have to handle the relay current, not the full load of 2 x 60 watt (=120 watts-20 AMPS!) on main beam. I'll keep the group updated as things go if it helps.

Did the relay and halogen conversion on Betty just after we got her back on road, Andrew - it's well worth it! At the time we still had the modern (2 year old Misubishi Colt) and the new lights on Betty were every bit as good as the ones on that. In fact, if anything they were slightly nicer because they didn't have the distracting razor-sharp edges that new ones seem to

It finally got reasonably dim outside so went out to see the effect of the spots. This is straight high beam using halogen bulbs: and this is high beam plus the spots: Seems like a worthwhile upgrade to me

They may be set a little low, Mac, but, until night falls sometime in mid-winter, I'd rather they were low than too high and annoying other drivers With all beams on and the radio up loud she can just about manage 6.5v across the battery at a (very) fast idle so it looks like the dynamo is just about able to keep up

Well, she failed on handbrake at 24% (needs 25) but, by the time I went back to collect her he'd tweaked up the adjusters and squeezed 26% for a pass - all within the allotted hour ;D So, I'm not sure whether that technically keeps her unbroken run intact (there was a fail sheet issued) but the pass was issued immediately after and at no extra charge so I think I'll claim a moral pass Speaking of morals, the moral of the story is - don't replace your brake shoes 4 days before an MOT and then not drive the car anywhere to bed them in

Betty's made it as far as the new Forest at least Average 35mpg with the middle 150 miles or so showing 40.1 (nicer roads than the end bits!) She also managed a sterling effort of Crickley Hill on the A417, just outside Gloucester. For those who don't know it, it's about 2 miles of around 1 in 10, with little let-up apart from a roundabout about 2/3 of the way up. On both of our last 2 trips Sheila has given problems here - first time overheating rather worryingly and the second stopping altogether when her fuel pump decided not to play. Betty got her belts snuggled down into low ratio and chugged away to the top - although she was down to 18 miles per hour (with full throttle) by the time we got there. I've had a quick add-up of the weight she's carrying since we got here and, between her, us and the trailer, she was pulling about 1200 kg up there! You should see the camber on her back wheels ;D ;D ;D
