Personally, if you've gone to the effort of removing the engine and the bellhousing it would make sense to reline them. If you have trouble finding somewhere to do it, there is a place in Colchester, Essex where us Essex Daffers get ours done, the last set cost £75. I would also remove the propshaft and check for signs of wear with a view to replacing if the rubber couplings have perished. Did you finfmd what was rattling about in there? A loose 'R' clip perhaps?

Hey . 33 , I was pleased / disapointed / suprised to find nothing lose in the clutch housing ! As I was on me own and she didnt run long enough for me to pinpoint + locate the rattle exactly ..I think I may have given myself lotsa extra work.....I now think it was the broken off hot-spot pipe rattling on the housing......but im now toying with the idea of a full restoration as she is in such good condition - ive only found one rust hole ( 50p coin sized ).. .Back to clutch ; excuse my igererence.......; I found a n/o/s Daf set of 4 (4) clutch shoe`s - the long-spring one`s , which I got for £10 - I supose its best to have all 8 matching lining`s ?? Will check the propshaft , thanks for your help.....

Looking at the picture the clips and springs seem ok, perhaps you had some loose brake lining rattling about, or maybe it's the hotspot pipe as you say. Nevertheless it's good to check the clutch on a Daf that's been standing a while (except the water cooled ones that have regular clutch plates that is). As a rule of thumb, we get our shoes relined to 3mm thickness. I would recommend that you have all matching shoes in terms of shape shoe and thickness of linings/newness etc. Hotspot pipes regularly rot through as condensation sits in them and weakens the pipe, then engine vibrations finish them off! Most owners cap and weld them, the carb mixture can be adjusted to compensate to a degree although you may find a slight flat-spot when pulling away. Otherwise Danny at www.dafhobby.nl sells them and the manifolds I believe can be found on Dutch e-bay for about €225. If you've only got such minimal rust them you really have been fotunate!! I would be tempted to dinitrol the chassis and get cavity wax in all the little nooks and crannies, then get her back to the road and start enjoying her! Good luck with your endeavours and do let us know how you get on.

If you're short on beer tokens then I'd be tempted to re-use those shoes for now as long as all the linings appear to be firmly bonded to the metal bits. To help get the maximum out of them (assuming they have the spring posts on both sides of each shoe?) while it's out switch each pair of shoes so that leading becomes trailing and trailing becomes leading.
That will even out the uneven wear you tend to get - the trailing shoes engage first because of their longer / weaker springs so they suffer more wear than the leading ones because the drum is already turning when the leading ones start to engage.

Those clutch shoes look okay too me id swap the leading trailing round and throw em back on as it aint that hard to pull a DAF engine. Good work
As for the rattling check that the spring at the back of the propshaft is there and that the exhaust isn't fouling any bodywork.

Hi, another source of rattles is the welds failing where the heat exchanger body is welded to the front exhaust pipes, usually a quick weld or braze[either at the front or rear of the heat exchanger] will cure the problem. starider.

Blimey ! 3 months since did anything to LouLou ! - Thats the problem with caring for someone 24/7........ Right ;engine inspection ; ; My Carter valve looks like this - from what ive read on here it looks ok to re-use ? The cover ( after scraping loads of tape off...) has a 1/2" long tear in the tube to the carb , I think I can superglue this ? I will also need a distributor cap and rotor arm and a coil , just to be safe....- I found points , plugs . plug leads and condenser locally . Thanks for your advice in advance .

I desperately want to get out to the workshop still , popped by to do security check and couldnt resist finding my T-cut ! THAT made me SMILE.. ;D

That's amazing and puts what we've got for Matilda (ie: nothing ) completely to shame! Really will have to get the two of them together at some point once LouLou-Belle's back in service

Absolutely! It's all rather compulsive reading actually and I only wish I had that sort of history for Gavina. Oh, other than the owners manual, tyre pressures written on the back of an envelope, a St. Christopher key ring and have an ashtray full of menthol butts. I'm rather jealous now. Please post some more - all very enjoyable reading.

Right ! Actually spent some time in the workshop today..... ;D Discovered this blocking the pipe ; ... as the other pipe looks like this ; As she wont be used much in the winter ...Im thinking of just blocking the intake manifold hole with " metal epoxy putty " ? ? Then onto the clutch lining`s ! I bought a set of 4 ( thats all he had ) N.O.S shoes for £4 but they are the trailing shoe`s - cant really see how I can use them as my leading shoe`s as the spring-locating pin would be on the wrong side and swapping springs doesnt look easy... ?? again , any advice is welcome chaps ! Then I thought ide have a larf......... Thats the engine-less Humber in the background... In the background is my son-in-laws 8,200cc Ford Popular ! I now have 3 cars in bits as the Cadillac waterpump seized on sunday , whilst on a rare day out ! . I ordered one from USA Monday , it arrived today ! @ 40% of the UK prices quoted !

It's common for that pipe to be capped. Is it the one on your n/s heat exchanger? Cold air passing through condenses at the bottom of that pipe and rusts it out. You'll need to cap that manifold pipe too. Build the weld inside the remnants of that pipe, unless you are able to weld ally that is... It's important to block that because if you have any holes in the pipe carrying the fuel/air mix that are inside the manifold then you'll not want any extra air coming in. That would force you to ritchen the mixture and in turn up the idle speed to get her ticking over right. Then you won't be able to change gear as the clutch would be engaged. Been there, done that! Can't tell you about the shoes, not worked on that old design before but Mr Horner may be your man for advice there.

Going against Mr Grinder's advice, I wouldn't worry too much about the rusted off pipe on the manifold itself. It shouldn't connect to the bit carrying mixture - or else you car would be breathing exhaust if it was all connected up properly! Make sure the pipe is capped off at the heat exchanger. Weld if possible, if not then roll up a piece of exhaust bandage, smother in gun-gum and push it tight into the hole, finishing off by tying over it with a couple of loops of wire to hold it while it sets. Betty's was good like that for about 15k miles On the clutch shoes I'd be tempted to use the leading ones you have and replace the trailing ones seeing as you've got spares. It's the trailing shoes that tend to take the most wear anyway because they (should be) the ones that start to engage first, otherwise you get a very "snatchy" engagement! By the time the leading shoes start to engage, the drum should be virtually at engine speed unless you're pulling a lot of weight or starting on a very big hill so they act to hold things rather than actually take up drive. As for the wheels and intake scoop, where can I get some for Matilda? ;D
