Hi all, I've Just come back from MOTing the 33 and all is fine but I got an advisory on both the front bottom ball joints, I followed him round and watched as he did the MOT and they are quite bad really, but its an "old school" mechanic and he let me off with them . I did not have a chance to have a good look at them and both my workshop manuals dont have any info, but are they adjustable with shims or do I have to get new ones? if new ones are needed anyone got any for sale? thanks and best wishes, Eric.

Not sure what ours are like on Betty, Eric, and Isabel's got the same advisory so I can't offer you our spares just yet I'm afraid. However, when you say "quite bad", how bad are they? The book allows up to 3mm (about 1/8 inch) vertical play in them before replacement provided there's no sideways movement.
Bear in mind that, in use, the weight of the car is sitting into the ball-joint on these so there's no risk at all of separation - unless you're planning on getting air ;D

I have some lower ball joints that I've yet to fit, but these are 'pegged' ball joints with adjustable shims as you say which apparently DAF bought in as an update to the earlier type.
Got mine through Stephen Balls who ordered a set which he didn't need. Weren't cheap at around £70 the pair but there you go. I think he got them through Wilco de Bore so DCN.

Hi Spunky,
I dont really know how bad as I was just watching him move them up and down with his lever, looked to me to be about 5mm, what book are you getting your info from?
I have a couple of books and they dont even get a passing mention?
Best wishes, Eric.

think he got them through Wilco de Bore so DCN. Having met the fella, I'd take issue calling him a bore (Wilco Boer is his name. I don't think there's any "de", "van" or anything else there.) You are of course correct to say he's connected with the DAF Club Nederland Magazijn. Erm yes, the 'de' bit my misunderstanding and the 'Bore' my typo - fat fingers and iPhone incompatible.

Hi Mac, I'm 100% sure the play was well over 3mm! looking at the picture of one on Danny's (Dafhobby) site it looks like its a sealed unit (no shims ). think I'll try to take a look at the car tomorrow. in the meantime if anyone has a pair for sale in the UK I'm in the market, otherwise I'll have to get them from Danny, better get a price off him anyway i suppose. Best wishes, Eric.

I've made some enquiries with the man who knows, and it seems that they are as rare as hens' teeth in the UK. We hope so source some later in the year.
In the meantime, it looks like it'll need to be Danny at DAF Hobby.

I believe I have some West Country toothed hens from many years ago. As some of my DAFs will be departing shortly I doubt very much if I will need all the sets I have.
I'll take a look and make sure that I do have what I think I have!!!

Hi Howard, that would be great if you have a pair! I've just taken a good look at mine and they are sealed units, no shims, so no adjustment . Best wishes, Eric.

Emergency ball-joint adjuster (universal model): Apply rounded end repeatedly to centre back of the joint body until play is acceptable ;D (yes, this does work as a temporary fix when a replacement joint is proving hard to locate!)

Hi all, I emailed Danny last week asking about ball joints and as yet had no reply which is odd , anyone know if he is on holiday or something? Best wishes, Eric.

He's not always the quickest to respond to e-mail. If I need something in a hurry then I call his mobile number which is on the dafhobby website. Not the cheapest way to get in touch but if you're in a hurry...

That's a nasty bill, but not a bad price for re-manufactured low volume parts I guess. Will definitely have to take a look at our spares sometime and see what might be done to recondition / re-engineer worn ones.......

Hi all,
just to let you know the ball joints arrived yesterday and I fitted them this morning, its a bit fiddly getting the leaf spring height just right to get it all together and clamped in place but no real bother, if they are repro joints they are well made and fit right.
Best wishes, Eric.
