Oh my goodness me John!
I have had one "go" on me over the years. It was in my early DAF days with my mimosa yellow 55. In my case, I wasn't travelling at speed, but just pulling out of a side road.
I sensed that something may be happening, because for a few miles prior, I felt a bit of a vibration from the transmission that I had not noticed before.
When it did go bang, it was the embarrassment as much as anything... Early 1980s, young chap who perhaps should have been in something more in keeping with his age at the time(!) in a bright yellow car and just at the moment, as if from nowhere, lots of passers-by appeared, including the unusual sight here of a policeman!
I calmly got out of the car, reached underneath and calmly pulled the broken belt away, then got back in and drove off. - Not so easy in a 46 though?!
Memories, eh.

Hi John, yes i have on the A38 twice near to where i live once in a volvo 343 and once in my 66 marathon coupe, you are quite right they make a large bang, when the one went on the coupe it blew bits of belt out all over the caridgeway sending cars scattering all over the place, it was my fault however as i had been doing 80 mph for around 70 miles and i could smell warm rubber so somthing was going to give! the 343 blew of the cover and the car behind ran over it.
i drove away both times, not possible in the 46 however.
hope that you had a spare, mind it is buy one get one free with the 46
