I've got Giles' book (the earlier edition) and he doesn't really say much bad about the DAF, except for it's granny trundling image. My eldest brother bought me it because he noticed (and it's true) that I've had a high proportion of the cars in the book. Giles does say that he's inexplicably fond of all the cars in the book, and it's certainly not written as if he has a sledgehammer behind his back.
I have another book (a much smaller one) called "The World's Worst Cars" and this too is softer on the DAF than you might expect, apart from the very last sentence which calls it a "disaster" and how it ruined the company etc etc etc.
However, DAF's get a better press than my Triumph Mayflower!
