Hi, thought I'd put this up for general thought. Jumped in the car this morning to turn it round for shelter in the garage due to Dennis. After a couple of minutes the engine just died along with the wipers. No ignition lights or handbrake warning light, no choke warning light, horn works, side lights work , hazard warning lights work, direction indicators don't work. Looked at the fuse box on top of the wheel arch and they all look OK. Other than the ignition switch which I'm about to inspect, are there any other suggestions as to the problem?

The items you note as not working are all live when the ignition is on; wipers, indicators, ignition itself and other warning lights are only operational once the ignition circuit is live, so I suspect either a key with problem, or a fuse that looks good, but isn't quite touching both terminals. This car is a Daf 46, with the extra warning lights fitted by Volvo and I'd take another look in the fuse box....
Where's the car?

Hi Andrew,
I will have a look at the points you suggest. The car is in Seaham, Co. Durham. I thought there me be another main fuse lurking somewhere out of site. Now where's my test meter?

It's possible (I haven't had a chance to look at a Daf 46 wiring diagram this afternoon) that there's a fuse covering all ignition circuits, before the individual circuits. I'll try and have a look at a diagram later if I have a chance!
(10 Minutes later) I've had a look at a wiring diagram for a 46 and ALL the items that have failed on your car are live from the ignition, but interestingly, the failure of the car's ignition system, which is NOT fused, means the break in connection is in the wire from the ignition switch to the fusebox. My betting is on a failure in the switch. If the starter itself still functions, that rules out a failure of the feed from the battery TO the ignition switch, and, if this is the case, it MUST be the ignition key that's failed.

The test meter and wiring diagram prevailed. No. 1 fuse feeds black wire live to ignition switch. The fuse had broken, not blown, and was not obvious till I put a test wire on it, there is a bridge between 1 and 2 fuse. All now seems OK thanks.

on the 46 estate that I bought to replace YOUR car, someone had got the wires the wrong way round on the fuseboard, and instead of the permanent live feeding a brass contact that fed 4 other fuses it had been put the other side so the feed for 4 of the other fuses was going back through a single 15a fuse.. caused me some serious headscratching
