I heard recently that legally LED headlamp bulbs must not be fitted to classic cars, many are failing the MOT Test if these bulbs are used.I assume the fluting in the headlamp glass which directs the beam does not work with LEDs. I'm sure someone will be able to quote chapter and verse from a testers manual.

According to the most recent issue of classics monthly they've now changed the rules on this for the MOT. If your car is from before 1984 (so fine for Dafs) you can fit LED or HID bulbs, so long as they pass the beam pattern and alignment tests in the MOT. These guys have some conversion kits that should work, even with fluted glass: www.bettercarlighting.co.uk/

We touched on this in the March issue of Belting along but since we printed it, the rules do appear to have been altered. Here is the article, if anyone missed it. Personally, I really wouldn't bother fiddling and changing things, but each to his own. Page 045 loose connections.pdf (37.24 KB)

I agree with Richard. Upgrading to 60/55 watt halogen headilghts makes a real improvement and is much simpler!

I am quite happy with my Daf headlights as fitted from new. I must add that LED headlights cause far more glare with a vast majority which seem to be wrongly adjusted. We have many roads down here in Devon which undulate and when on coming LEDs reach the brow of a rise the glare is blinding.I firmly believe that retro fitting of LEDs will not produce the beam pattern required, whatever may be claimed.

Those plastic rings work a treat, but getting the spring clip over-centre to hold the bulb is tricky.
Don’t be tempted to trim the plastic to make it easier because the clips won’t stay in place well - yes I did end up buying another set!

.The trick is, I think, put the ring on the bulb first, then it and the bulb together will fit in the reflector, and the clips will then go over the bulbs base.

The first pic is of a standard 40/45W filament bulb, the second is an H4 55/60W halogen bulb in the same headlamp, a Cibie 5 3/4 inch for a Daf 33. A big improvement.
The halogen bulb gives the 15 degree "kick-up" on the left, dont know why its not there on the filament bulb.

All you need now are some clip-on selective yellow filters, to give your car that beautiful “French” look.....
Just a thought.......

Hi, meant to say you used to be able to get Halogen bulbs to fit DAF 32/33/44 without any mods. I must have a look in my various workshops to see if I can find any.

It may be me, but having re-read the MOT regulations regarding retro fitting of LED bulbs/lights, if the LEDs were fitted before 1986 the car can't be failed, but if fitted after 1986 the car will fail[I think I have it right. So an upgrade to Halogen seems the best option[sorry, no yellow filters for me!].
