Hello all, can anyone tell me how to do a 12 volt conversion on a daf 33 ,last time I tried to start it I connected a 12 volt battery and I think I blew something, need to know what to change and whether its worth doing one reason is the 6 volt batteries are so expensive....any help would be appreciated thanks....Paul

It’s quite complex: the dynamo & starter motor nerd replacing, as do the wiper motor, the ignition coil & the carburettor solenoid, as well as all the light bulbs, including all the dashboard ones. The wiring loom itself will be fine, although I question your reasons for carry out the conversion; a 6volt system, properly maintained & serviced should work perfectly well. Happy to advise further if needed!

A 404 will be a suitable one. They’re not cheap, weighing in at about £100, but looked after, will last a long time. I know a dealer who might sell them cheaper; whereabouts is your car (& you!)?

My late in-laws were from Horncastle, north of you! The earlier Dafs than yours also had a6 volt electrical system, but had a starting handle, which helped if the battery ran flat. Your 33 doesn’t have that facility, so you need to make sure your electrics are in good fettle! Your only 90 miles from me. When Covid ends maybe I could see it?

Sounds good to me , funnily enough I just put a 404 battery in my eBay at £119 seems little bit bigger length and width but the height is good...thanks...Paul.

One of the reasons 6volt batteries are more expensive is the low volume of demand.

Try mgb specialist in morning near bourne. Failing that give me a message on .here. I'd avoid using the batteries used in a MGB car, as these are not as powerful as the 404. MGB cars run on 12 volts and use two 6 volts batteries, one either side of the transmission tunnel, under the back seats, to make 12 volts. Each 6 volt battery in a MGB is really half a 12 volt battery, not a proper 6 volt one, and would only produce half the amperage of a normal 6 volt one. Statrider's comment regarding the cost is, unfortunately true, so when you buy one, look after it!

Never had issue with high power mgb batteries. Use one in our daf30 with no problem. Long as all is set correctly its fine.

I thought the MGB batteries were too tall to fit in, but they definitely are less money

Yes they look good , I'll start with getting a battery then work through the ignition system, let you know when I get it fired up again...Paul.
