Hi guys,
Newbie here. I may be mad but I’m buying a Daf 33 as my first car. May be needing some advice of you. Its looking solid but going up to see it in a few weeks to confirm. It’s a runner but apparently isn’t breaking properly. What is working on the brakes like? Is it something a garage is likely to run a mile from or a routine job. I am looking forward to getting to know this wee car through sickness and in health. I’m sure it’s going to be a learning curve.

You've definitely come to the right place for help, assistance and advice for all things Daf! The only other thing to do is to join the Daf Owners' Club, which I should recommend you join post haste as the magazine will be a font of knowledge and membership will be useful in obtaining parts, attending meetings and general Daf camaraderie!
As to your specific concerns, the brakes of a Daf 33 bear a remarkable similarity to the brakes on early Minis, so an old-school garage will be able to adjust and repair them. They're drum brakes all-round, with adjusters on the back of the plates. A copy of the Autobooks repair manual might be useful-they often pop up on a "well-known internet auction site" and would make good bed-time reading!
Another thing that sometimes confuses new Daffers is the strange sensation of the engine revving up as the car slows down. The car is meant to do this, so if this sensation un-nerves you, don't panic!
Any other questions-just ask! And welcome to the world of Daf! Where do you live? A Daffer might be nearby to assist!

Hi Ross, as Andrew says the brakes are definately Mini so new wheel cylinders, brake shoes, adjusters[if rounded off] are readily available and as Andrew recommends, a workshop manual is quite essensial as there are a variety of cylinder sizes.Manuals are always available on Fleabay.
Any competent garage should be able to sort the brakes for you.
The engine should rev slightly when braking to ensure the centrifugal clutch remains engaged to assist engine braking.
There are several suppliers of 33 spares:- DAF Classics, Essex DAFs, The DAF Owners Club, and DAF Hobby in Holland.
If you care to send me your address via a personal message I'll send you a couple of copies of the excellent club magazine, which we hope will persuade you to join the owners club. starider.

Amazing guys! I most certainly am sold on this little car. I will be joining the club too!
These things seem pretty great to keep going.
I’m based in South London! Glad to be dodging Ulez charges!
This is my first car and I can’t wait. Had old scooters but ready to move onto a car now I’m 30.
Whats a typical insurance estimate btw? Did i read 84 quid somewhere?!
Thanks so much. Will post her up when she arrives.

I suggest a quote from Footman James would be a good starting point. They have a specialist Classic Car dept.

Yeah Definitely. I was with them when I had a Phillips Gadabout moped and they were pretty cheap. I am so excited to learn more about this car and I really feel positive about the community here of people who also love these things. It's great. It really seems like these are unrecognised underdogs. I personally think the simplicity of their design is really aesthetically pleasing.
Hopefully next week I will be sealing the deal.

And here's some really good news: your Daf should be exempt from the U.L.E.Z. charge! Classic cars, once registered with the appropriate authorities, are EXEMPT from the charge, so you ought to be O.K. As for being in South London, I'm in north London-well, Hertfordshire really, but I'm still on the tube network, which is most people's definition on "London" so you are not alone!
As for insurance, I pay £35 per year, on a driver only policy, limited to 3,000 miles per annum, so, when one factors in home servicing, zero road tax and a car that brings tears to a petrol attendant's eyes, it's really cheap motoring!

Like to see some pics of it !
Check here to see if you are exempt from the ulez, I think if its registered as a "Historic Vehicle" it should be. Put it in the Taxation Class of the V5
If it shows charges I believe you have to register it with TFL, but I am not sure.

Aaah, it looks very nice.
One day you must tell "your story". I.e. how/why/what brought you to DAFs etc. We're nosey, you see - and I always need stories for our mag!

My story is that basically I have had scooters and have been wanting to get a classic car for years. I recently got a large rent repayment and the time to find a car came. I was initially after a Reliant Regal saloon but they are getting pricey. I was trying to find something economic and also quirky but not too much work when I found it. Yeah Haha I have got "start in gear burnt into my memory"
I am going to take it to a garage and have it looked over once it arrives.

I will be joining the club too. I will be needing an age related certificate to get it reregistered.

Hi Rossrob92, This car originally came from Anglia Car Auctions, in February, before going on to eBay ! I did look at the pics, but was unsure about the drivers A post, and drivers door hinge mounts. angliacarauctions.co.uk/classic/sat-27th-sun-28th-february/1973-daf-33-variomatic/
It looks a good project, and with some work will be a good car to have on the road! ps, Do you know to start it IN gear? Oh yeah I spotted this listing whilst doing research. Thanks for the heads on the A post. I hope there isn't too much expensive welding to do. I plan on just getting her on the road and then fix other bits as I go on. Fingers crossed there isn't too much.

Sorry to read about being "done over".
I hope you are able to find another.
Must be the curse of the *bay... I always refer to it as the DAF site of doom.
Good luck.

Like Richard I'm sorry to hear of your disappointment over the 33. As Richard says the 44 in Cornwall is a much better proposition. I went down to see it last week and if you read my post["44 gone deep south". indeed all the posts daydoodler has put in on the 44 over many years], you will see just how much work has been done.Although it doesn't need an MOT, Bob always has it tested annually. It can[with insurance] be driven away.

I am just awaiting pay to come through and then I will pay for it. It isn't viable for me to go to Cornwall but I trust with all the work that has been done it is a good vehicle so will be buying outright hopefully. I will need to arrange transportation.

As the car is on the road, it should be easy to arrange insurance on line, with one of the classic insurance specialists, and drive home. I know thats what I would do !! I would get there by train, and , depending on how long the whole adventure would take, perhaps stay overnight at a local hotel. Much cheaper, and more interesting, than arranging transportation (probably more reliable as well !!) www.thetrainline.com/destinations/trains-to-cornwall

The main problem at the moment is that accommodation in Cornwall is almost non existant with the massive!! influx of holiday makers.

I have a number of a car transport guy I've used a few times to move cars for me. His prices are almost obscenely cheap and he's very good. As an example, he moved a classic Skoda for me from Dungeness to North London for less than it would have cost me to hire a trailer, pay the Dartford Crossing and petrol! If you're interested please PM me and I'll pass his details to you. He covers anywhere in the U.K.
I shall be in west Devon at the end of August for a family holiday. My Subaru Forester has a tow hitch, yellow breakdown lights and I own an "A" frame..... Just a thought......
