Hi all,
I was wondering if there was anyway to find out how many "on the road" Daf 55 Marathon Coupes there were left in the country?

Regarding the number of 55 marathon coupes in UK, I was told by a 55 owner with good industry contacts, about 7 years back that there were thought to be only 20 on the road. A very sad figure of course, but then I think you have to be realistic. All cars go throgh a "banger" stage at around 10-15 years, prior to becoming classics - they are cheap transport at this stage and very vulnerable to the scrapyard! Dafs went through this stage in the 1980's, and when people got enourmous quotes from volvo this, I believe was the stage at which we lost the majority of them. You also have to be realistic about variomatic transmission! In my experience the major downfall of the system is that there are too many seperate parts to it,and just because you have spent a fortune on a new clutch for example wouldn't necessarily stop your propshaft from going the next week!! Although my experience with dafs has been limited to very low mileage 44's, the most miles i've ever been able to go without some sort of breakdown is about 2000-3000 miles. It would be interesting to see what other people think about this subject.
