Hello all, Seeing that a phote says a thousand words, I´ll not waste any words just yet... Now a bit cleaner too, this was at one of the services on the big car park round London.

It's better than the 44... Leaks less oil too. Just a wee bit noisy

Mostly the exhaust, but the clutch does make a noise or two... I'll get it changed after holiday.

Loving the drive every day One thing, any reason she wouldn´t like hot starts? Cold start is almost instant, hot ones take a while with a bit of blue at the back (as if she is drowning in fuel, it doesn´t smell like oil.) Cheerio

hi onne.
you may have said it yourself. "as if she is drowning in fuel"
make sure she is not running rich. timing out a touch could also do it.
do a full service. especially air filter and mixture.

My 55 dose not like hot starts mate, worm or cold no problem but not hot i think on mine fuel evaporates in the carb as it is over the exhaust manifold them it sucks aload through giving it a rich smell.

I might see if I can get an air filter for her then, and some plugs before I go on holiday.

Air filter is good>possibly due for minor tune>check contact gap in dist>most of 55's i have had in past suffered puff of blue smoke when starting hot or cold>Do you use lead additive with fuel ? I had no problems starting Daf when hot with touch of accelerater>on my last trip from Holland the FUEL GUAGE SENDER became faulty, wire coil type... Its been removed 3 times with view of cleaning and repairing it without success, reads ok when full tank!...Eric B

Thanks for that Eric I´ll have a look at the points too today then, fingers crossed for the weather. She´s going to get me to the Lake District on saturday, over the Kirkstone Pass Also noticed a minor oil leak, which seems to be dripping from the fuel pump (can this be leaking from where it is mounted on the block?)

Well, just got back from the Lakes, and she behaved most of the time. Just the "£%"%£"^ exhaust that kept falling off.
When I got to about three miles from home the car didn't want to idle anymore, and backfires like a good un.
Any idea where I should start? Could this just the points?

Hi Onne, if contacts gap >timing >dist & HT leads all ok electrically. Only leaves idle jet ! spare wheel off > remove jet squirt & clean with carb cleaner which will do the trick. Check vacume pipes also the one at brake servo............. Eric B

Thanks Eric, Electrical things all seem ok as far as I can see, and all vacuum hoses are in place.
I'll try that idle jet. Whereabouts is that?

Once spare wheel removed - at the top of carb volume adjustment screw is a brass screw with tiny hope in top of its head -undo it & squirt carb cleaner in to it + cean jet replace it. I have done it in the past & succeded. Cheers.......... Eric

Carb is now clean. Sadly the plastic T piece snapped ( as they do...) Thankfully Paul Dafdaffer had a spare one. Real pity the waterpump housing gave up after that, the pipe going to the heated inlet manifold snapped clean off... But apart from the new rust hole, intermittent wiring and the suicidal exhaust all is well

and don't forget to mention the snapped off stud still stuck in the head, and also the distributor that had destructed itself. and thanks to stef for getting a replacement

A big thank you to Paul Dafdaffer and Stefan for fixing the 55 Only issue she's got now (apart from cosmetics) is that she starts to misfire when she is hot. (hot as in its too hot to stick your head under the bonnet. She seems to start missing a beat then. I've made sure that there are no airlocks in the cooling system by having her warm up and squeezing the hoses, so that should be ok. Oil is now at a good level, it was a bit low, which would make her hotter I suppose. Any ideas?

It's a Renault engine - what do you expect from the French? ;D
Also, make sure fuel lines are routed correctly so you don't get vapourisation (and fuel starvation) in the pipes. That depends on what sort of misfire it is and when - regular or irregular? Rough idle / normal cruising / only under hard load?

Idle is fine, its just when the engine is revved, load or no load.
