condensor and points are 20 years old told you to get some ;D had to run a file between the points to get it to work. also is the water level ok? had it gone down. and is it overheating? we didn't get much chance to test it did we

It does get quite hot quite quickly, but cools down as soon as I'm on the move. I'll change the points and condenser today though.
Water level was still above the cooling element, I've topped it up again.

Found the reason why the water level was getting lower, the return pipe from the heated inlet manifold had perished. No water was seen as its right above the exhaust, so the water tends to evaporate...
All replaced now.
Also replaced points and condenser, as well as the cracked HT leads. Fingers crossed!

Timing now set staticly, she seems to be running very nicely, with a good bit of power too.
One thing that did happen, is that she got rather hot on the way there, so I have temporarily removed the thermostat.
Did a 80 mile drive today, and she wouldn't idle when coming off the motorway... any idea what that can be? She was fine as soon as she cooled down a bit again.
Can this possibly be something to do with the mixture (as in too lean?)
Cheers

Well, slowly getting there. I hope the car is ready for yet another little trip, this time 1200 mile round trip to Holland.
And why do I always get cars that wherever i poke my finger a hole appears in the bodywork? 1 front end of sill done, just the other side at the front, bot end of sills at the back, and the rear quarters to do...
After that I am going to see if I can get the dashboard out, and separate the top and bottom so they can both be resprayed/straightened.
Any idea how I should get the lower part back into shape? A previous owner has fitted a radio, which didn't fit in the originial if you catch my drift. Unless anyone happens to have a spare dash for a 55 floating around of course
BTW, is there any way of testing a radiator and flow out of the water pump in situ?

She's not leaking any water, just wondering if the core is clogged up.

Well, the car made it without fail for the full 1200 mile trip. Only thing that broke was the speedo cable. She did get quite hot but never yoo hot.
Can't really blame her for getting into the red when she's been doing 75 odd miles an hour in 30 degree heat, and then sit in traffic jam for two hours...
She has also developed a bit of a weird noise, which is coming from the back, a sort of constant clunk. Belts are ok, maybe something closer to the wheel has come loose. Only does is when under a very light load, not when coasting or when under full throttle.
Managed 38 mpg before the speedo went.

If "into the red" is meant literally then you really want to find what's causing it. A well sorted engine won't go that high even in much worse conditions than that and, if the Daf version is anything like the Renault unit it's based on, they really don't like overheating. Alloy and wet liners is a bad combination to get too hot! As for the fuel consumption - sounds pretty reasonable, guess there was a profit on the trip!

I do still suspect a slightly dodgy radiator and waterpump. Bear in mind that the above is without a thermostat... Hope you had a great time in Ireland Stef

The daf version is almost the same as the renault one about 95% of the part numbers are the same at a motor factors its only inlet manifold and exhaust the differ much.

I think this car hates me... I now have a sort of flappy noise coming from the rear of the car, and I have been informed that this can only be the (or one of the) belts...
Do all the 55 (with 66 engines)'s squeak a bit rubbery (not belt slippery) when reversing up a hill?

I tried to replace the fuel sender unit today... Which came out no problem at all. Pity it wasn't the one I was expecting it to be Also found more rot, drivers footwell is starting to go, as well as the whole of the boot floor. I do sometimes wonder why I sold my 100% solid Morris Minors, and got two semi rotten Dafs... Before I go, as anyone got any idea how I can remove the steering column? I have obviously removed the three screws holding in the plastic cover, but that seems to get stuck on the choke cable... how do I get past that? I want my shiny steering wheel!

It's the one with the float on the little arm.
I'll see if I can have a look at the one on my 44 to see if I can change them over temporarily, so I can at least check the rest of the wiring.

How complicated are these to replace?

Boots? I don't think mine has those, the 55 rear setup is like the 44 and 33s. The good old swing arms
