I know Triumph related posts are frowned on here but the fact is there are some knowledgeable people here and I am desperate as Bruce is booked in for an MOT 9am tommorow morning. I will pay my pennance with a Gladys update soon.
Bruce has thrown a strop the night before the test and I need some ideas as im a bit flumoxed.
Heres the story. I started the car to take it down to the tyre fitters for a new tyre. It started and ran normally for about 5s then the starter motor reactivated with the engine running and the key in ignition not start. I switched it off and found that it will now start as soon as you turn the ignition on and the starter motor will then not disengage. I did a slight bodge to get it to the tyre fitter and pulled the 2 small wires off the solonoid switch. This means that the key now only does the ignition and to start the car the bonnet has to be opened with the ignition on and the under bonnet starter button pressed. This is a faff is annoying and is almost certainly going to put the MOT tester in a bad mood tomorrow morning.
Any ideas people

I would start with the ignition barrel, sounds like something is amiss there...

Ignition switch / barrel or a short somewhere. Disconnect the wire from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid and wire to a separate push-button switch for now, then tell the MOT guy it's a security feature so he doesn't worry that you're bodging things

id also check to see if the wires are live to the solenoid as it may have simply stuck in the open position through an internal short.. will be easier to check than pulling the barrel off the column I would have thought

No steering lock the barrel just unscrews from the dash binnacle which is held in by 2 screws
