Dear fellow Daffers, I own a Volvo 66 and live in the states. (Seattle) I recently replaced the solex carb with a downdraft Weber 2bbl. At this time I also dropped in a optical ignition system from Crane. The car performs much better now. It starts right up on the first try. Everything has improved except for one problem. The car will not idle. It seems to immediately die when I am not giving it a little throttle. I notice that the idle is a bit more unstable if I try and let it idle with the brake pedal depressed as well. When the choke is out (applied halfway) the car will idle very smooth. Even then, however, if I press the brake pedal, the engine struggles a bit. I think I have a vacuum leak, but I am also suspicious of the vacuum solenoid. Is there a way to trouble shoot the illaborate vacuum system? Also I have read on this site that a particular rally daf replaced the vacuum module with a compressor, any thoughts on this?

Hi Folks It pay's to think simple like: Get the engine to run on its own without any vacuum or any external items that may effect it. Next if engines working OK, then connect each item one at a time, it is the only way to trace the exact area of the problem. Hope this helps.
Best regards Bob.

Hi taken your advice onboard but also have to tell you error typing ,volvo is a 91 model any more in particular to this model. I think my main problem is no overdrive function , only time it goes below 30k rpm is downhill Cheers Harpulina

hi. no overdrive on a variomatic still points to an air leak or fault on the vacuum system. the ideal is to replace every vacuum pipe so you know they are all good, and tight. it is not that expensive and will often cure the problem.
good luck.
let us know what happens.
