Oh my lord. I wish I had the patience and skill to make engines look like that. So shiny, looks like it's new Great work!

L.O. John. Yes sir, it sure looks good ! I'm a bit worried about the polished oil cooler though. I reckon (If I remember correctly from my school physics lessons) that matt black radiates heat much better than a polished surface. Cheers, Pete H.

I always have a point of view! It's correct that black surfaces radiate better but in this case, the dominant transfer is by conduction to the forced airflow. In this case, the paint will act (slightly) as an insulator. It probably doesn't make much difference and aesthetics can be allowed free reign. It's interesting to note that radiators are often painted black but the expensive ally ones are left natural so everyone knows they're expensive ally ones! J.

Black should attract heat and white bounces off heat. My opinion is that a painted surface would hold on to heat more than unpainted. It looks good John, very clean. If you wanted to protect the copper from the elements (because salt, mud, grime and other road muck would get the best of it), I would use a heat resistant paint or if you like the copper colour, a stain of some sort. I believe that when the air is forced through it will cool the oil regardless of black or white paint or even left bare. I'm hoping to get my engine as clean as that one. That is my penny's worth.

Which is also why these ally radiators can rot away in one (salty) winter

You could put a clear varnish on it. It will be shiny and protected.

Looking at the condition of that, are you sure your workshop isn't the old Daf factory, John? That is absolutely stunning (especially the engine itself)!

One day I'll get to take that much care over one - meanwhile, keeping them looking tidy and reliable for daily use (especially with the fleet up to 3 soon) is almost a full-time-spare-time occupation. Retirement seems a long way away sometimes

L.O. John.
Where did you source the aftermarket spring cushions?
Mine are in need of replacement!
Cheers.
