hi. i bought a daf 44 about a year ago to stop it being scrapped (it was outside waiting for the scrap van when i saw it) and hope to MOT it this week. it failed last week but not on anything major and i will do it over the next few days. i have been looking at clubs/forums etc, but nobody seems to know of another surviving daf44. i was wondering if anyone known how many there out there. any info would be appreciated.

I DON'T BELIEVE IT.... the photo you have put up as a mk1 is MINE. it must have been taken about 18 months ago. 6 months before i bought it. my father was keeping his 1954 thames truck in this unit at the time and this car was due to be scrapped before i saw it and bought it. this car should be running around swansea again very soon and i am looking forward to driving it. you should be able to see this car in singleton park, swansea on may bank holiday weekend as i am hoping to enter again this year (it was in last years show but it went down on a trailer as i had only bought it ten days earlier). maybe i will see some of you down there.

hi that is great news, i was intrested in the car but couldnt get down to sort it out as we have not long had a baby, it was just the wrong time!, the white one below was mine until i sold it in 2006, hope you join the daf owners club as we having a big meet up in august with people from holland, there will be lots of different models,
i only know of only one other mark one in this country and i have not seen that for years,
good luck with the DAF and keep in touch, we will always try and help.
Paul
ps, John yes you are right, funny thou as there are alot more diferences between the later model and the 2nd generation one than there are between the mk1 and 2

Wow! That one with the red interior! You had better jolly well look after it - it is a very early one with the "thinner seats". You'll have DAFfers drooling over it - this is a very rare car. (I have always liked the white ones with red seats. I remember when we had the big DAF25 bash in 2005, I kept wandering over to look at one of our Dutch friend's white 33 with red seats. Lovely)

Well done you - and the MoT tester! Good luck with the first runs. Remember to start it in forward or reverse, not "neutral".

congrats ;D ;D
hope that they didnt rolling road test it for the brakes thou, i should have said before as this kills the transmision/driveshafts.
i had an episode of that a few years ago but its a long story,
well done and thanks for putting one of the rarest cars back on the road!

you will be pleased to know that the mot tester did NOT put the back wheels on the rolling road but took it outside and drove it up the yard to test the brakes instead.
the mot tester likes old cars himself and quite enjoyed getting his hands on my daf.
apart from a partial fuel blockage causing me to cut out every 1/2 mile or so the car went quite well. I have now got to try and find a set of points and a condenser. there is an auto jumble down here next week so i may get lucky but if anyone out there knows where i can get some could you please let me know. I will have to check the vacuum lines as it does not seem to go up the gears very fast but this may just be me not used to the car and it does change down fairly well.
will keep you informed as road test continue but i am definately enjoying myself driving it.

Hi daf44,you can get points and condenser from Danny at www.dafhobby.nl He is in Holland.I have bought loads of parts from him. They arrive quickly and it is easy to use pay-pal to pay for parts.Danny has always[so far]been able to supply what I need. Some times he has been unable to supply new, but has been able to supply good second.Ignition parts are new. starider.

Hi everyone I have just collected my "new"1972 Daf 44 in Mimosa yellow, it has only 12,850miles on the clock, but has been off the road for at least 12 years, so it needs a lot of work.I will post some pictures when I have had more time to look at it properly. starider.

congratulations on another daf being brought back to life this car could well surprise you. mine was of the road for twenty years, most of it stored outside, and it still amazes me how solid these cars were and how well the can take sitting for long periods of time. the work i did for mot was minimal. i have had 7-8 year old cars that failed on a LOT worse than this one. now it is on the road i am finding little problems here and there, it is still running a little flat, and the gears seem to take a while to change up (you know what i mean : but it is getting better all the time and is to be expected after 20 years parked up. let us all know how it goes. good luck paul44

Sorry if Ive dragged this topic up after a long rest, but you can add another 44 to the surviving list, my 1972 model, not sure if its a mk1 or mk2 though. Past its MOT last weekend. Would it be possible to have some sort of count of all the surviving Dafs known on the website ? I dont know anything about websites but if you could have a page where members and visitors add their Daf or Dafs it would be easy to count them up. Sten

Good idea Sten. I'll see what I can muster - unless someone else can beat me to setting a section up - I think it could be done as a poll, but I can't work out how to start one!!!
And well done on the MoT.

Only problem with a poll (or anything come to that) is the risk of duplicate entries where more than one person is aware of a car that they know the owner won't enter. Ideally any survey needs to be based on registration or chassis number but then there's the problem that how many people will know the registrations of "non-club" cars. An alternative would be to base it on known / last known owners or locations so that all the inconfirmed ones might eventually be tied up with their owners but that's a little ( ) outside what a standard forum system could handle. Maybe start with a simple "I know of a Daf..." type thread and see what info can be gathered / cross referenced from there?

Bangor's near enough - especially as you have a guide to show you the way - she'll probably insist on a lift off you though
