hi rich.
don't write the starter off quite yet.
My old beetle starter caught fire like that.
as the brushes wore down carbon dust built up over the years. it eventually jammed the brushes so the starter would not work properly and then the dust caught fire as i was trying to start the car one day.
All i did was strip the motor and clean all the dust out. I didn't even have to change the brushes as they were not totally worn down, just jammed by the dust.
Worth a try. especially if you need the car now.
good luck.

I had same problem with my Dilly (44). Thorough clean out and new bushes produced a revelation. Starter now works better than I have ever known! Hopefully this will prove so with you too.

At present i have 1300 66 marathon engine in my 55 with single down pipe exhaust and a volvo 340 short starter, solenoid at horizontal position a few mm away from exhaust > heat sink plate off < nearly an year now & 2 trips to holland + London traffic , It's been fine. ( 2 types of 340 starters 1st normal one with small armature shaft 2nd type with slightly bigger diameter of heavy duty. Both types can be used on Dafs.
