A while ago I posted about smoke from our 33. Now that it's had a few good blasts, there's still a bit of a problem when it's been standing and when you come off the over-run. On "normal" engine layouts, both of these are pretty good signs of inlet stem seals worn and i'd guess that the flat layout on these would tend to do the same as oil can pool in the rocker covers.
Checking the book, it seems that seals were fitted to "later" engines but it doesn't specify what "later" means. As a '72 model, I'd guess ours qualifies though.
So, does anyone out there know (a) when they started fitting stem seals and (b) current suppliers / part number etc if they can be obtained?
The alternative is to pull a head (can this be done without pulling the engine? Looks tight but possible) and match by measurements. Not sure how Sian would take it if I start major dismantling of "Betty" right now ........

Hi Joe If you leave the car for a while I think they all seem to start with a puff of smoke with the air cooled units. I have noticed that the engine never seems to be horizontal and therefore one of the cylinders will always collect some oil. Also all the air cooled engines that I have stripped down I have never found a valve seal? The last one I took apart was on the 33, It had good compression but was using oil and found that the oil control rings on the pistons had worn down to the diameter of the pistons. I checked the compression rings on both pistons and they were well within limits also the bores of the cylinders. My recommendation If you found the same, would be to replace the oil control rings or may be the pistons complete. You can take the cylinder heads off with the engine in the car, but the cylinders and pistons are an engine out job. Hope the above will help you.
Regards Bob.
