I thought I'd update on Lorna, all is going extremely well, just want to get some bodywork done on her soon ( rear arches and rear quarters)
Did 250 miles in her today, she used approx 200ml of oil, and did about 35mpg, which is reasonable considering she did it mostly at 65-75 mph on the way there, and had massive queues on the way back (M40 accident, cross country through warwickshire to avoid roadworks at J15 M40, and then queueing from J21 to J24 on the M1...)
So all good, I've done over 1000 miles in her already!

Lorna is back on Anglesey for a few bits and pieces. Having lost about 1 1/2 litres of oil on the way (200 miles) we decided that the crank front oilseal should be the first bit tackled. Photo story of the job at: www.dafmobile.ournet.org.uk/index.php/page/19.htmlbut, for anyone who doesn't want to see the whole thing, a small point we found along the way. Not the easiest way to get access to check yoru fanbelt, but..... Judging by the markings it may well be original: What with that, Isabel's drive belts and Betty's spare tyre I'm thinking of starting a museum of original Daf rubber ;D Luckily, the belt was available from Halfords - the only place open around here on a bank holiday Saturday - number HB 713a. And no, it wasn't listed for a Daf

Seeing that I haven't really got any updates, as nothing has really happened...
She'll go through the 43000mls tomorrow. Can't believe I have done nearly 10% of the total mileage in the two months I've owned her...
Steam Rally in Belper (Derbyshire) tomorrow.

Well at last I have a problem of some sorts She keeps stalling, and preferably pointing down hill whilst braking. Any ideas? Apart from the "air" filter that is. Now 43830 miles on the clock btw.

I think I may have found the idling problem.... The electronic thingy on the carb had come loose... Haven't tried yet though seeing that I'm at work

Yup, she is idling again :-) there is a little plume of blue smoke every now and again though.... Although that might well be the airfilter

Now with a new MOT Only three advisories: Minor leak on the exhaust ( 3 inch hole hold closed with chilli can (thanks Stefan) Service brake only 56% effective (sounds fine to me) Parking brake only 26% effective (ditto) Good thing I wiped clean the inside of the backplate then

Good news - but wouldn't like to rely on those brake figures in an emergency Also bear in mind that if it was fluid you cleaned off the backplates then in an accident there's a very good chance your insurers will invalidate your cover

Don't you worry, they'll be seen to in the very near future. (as soon as the Minor has sold)

My 55 only got 51% at its last mot but will still lock both front wheels even then, they are better now with use and lock the wheels even easyer now.
still have the other half of the can ready for the next hole.

My oil leak is getting worse and worse, how hard is it to replace the pushrod tubes?
Also, does the 44 share it's rear cylinders with anything else in case mine are worse than thought?

Pushrod tubes are head off (so preferably engine out), stretch the corrugated bits a little, and refit everything. I believe someone on here mentioned doing them with the engine in-situ but I wouldn't fancy it!
Rear 44 brakes I have no idea on I'm afraid

i changed Richards on his 33 with engine in and it was very easy. didnt take that long, not done then on the 44 but would have thought them easier as there is more room under the bonnet. if you get some from danny i will chuck them on for you. infact get a set for me while you're at it

Indeed. Paul DAF Daffer worked a miracle with the pushrod tubes, because it was a freezing cold day - quite literally, and how on earth he kept the feeling in his fingers, I don't know.
But there we are - and I would have thought that the extra space in the engine compartment of a 44 would help - although it depends where that extra space is!

Sure, will order two sets then, does that mean 8 in total? Are they of the expensive variety?

You can change (at least) the R hand push rod tubes with the engine in the car, probably the LH ones too. You cannot change the head with it in the car... as I've just discovered

Hi folks You can not get the cylinder heads off with the engine in-situ, but you can change the push rods, tubes and seals. The seals I have found to be the problem is the one under the rocker shaft mounting to the head, it is above the tubes that enclose the push rod tube and is of a neoprene type, thick flat washer with a flat steel washer on it. If this leaks the oil drops down onto the pushrod tubes and covers them in oil and depending on how the engine is siting you think the seal or tube is leaking either inboard or outboard. My recommendation is to take the rear cooling cover off the cylinders, and clean the tubes and cylinders with some brake drum cleaner, run the engine for 10 minutes and with a good light check where the oil is coming from. My solution so far is using 2 neoprene O rings or a piece of neoprene tubing cut to 4 mm thick. Or it could be the seals or tubes?
Bob.

Just thought this one needed an update Thanks to Daf Centre Derbyshire now running smoothly again. Spent a large amount of money on the exhaust to get that welded up... Hot spot pipe has also been welded shut. Peace has returned Not bad considering she actually passed the MOT with the bean tin on 5 months ago! She could do with a polish though, the paint is so dull it almost makes matt black cars look shiny...
