Does anyone happen to know if you're allowed to use black & white number plates on a trailer pulled by a pre '73 car or do you have to use modern ones?

I think you have to use modern ones I have seen many trailers pulled by classics and they have all had yellow reflective numberplates. That is unless you go south a bit to the cardigan bay coast and then you will see that everyone has a bit of paper and a biro for there numberplate that is if they have one at all and lights what are they for. Also if the tow veichles number plate is clearly visable then the trailer doesn't need one but visable also includes not obscured by dips or bends in the road by the trailer or load which unless you have a tractor is pretty hard to do

Cheers, Richard. We'll get extra plates made cos Betty and Sheila will both be getting turns at towing. The tent can have Sheila's number and Betty can have a towing board with 6v bulbs and her reg on it. Of course, (hypothetically) we may need an alternative plate for the 6v board sometime

Well, I couldn't see anything in the Act that covered it so I asked VOSA.
Vosa said "It's not us, ask the Dft. Here's their email page". So I asked the Dtf.
Dft said "It's not us, ask DVLA. Here's their email page".
So I went to the DVLA email page (https://emaildvla.direct.gov.uk/emaildvla/cegemail/directgov/en/index.html) and followed the "please select a category for your query" links.
I chose Number plates or personalised registration numbers followed by The rules for the display of a number plate which seemed promising.
I filled out my details so they knew who to reply to and clicked the button to continue. They thanked me for my enquiry and will get back to me.
The only trouble is, there was no point in the process where I was actually able to type in a question so they'll have no idea what my query is! ;D
