I was going to take her to Derbyshire the other day to see Stefan. Only a few miles up the road, she started pulling left when braking and the the whole steering column started shaking at 40 - 50 m.p.h. I quickly pulled over as it was so violent that I thought that a wheel was coming off. The right wheel was really hot which means that the brake must be rubbing. I turned back home and then my brake pedal went way down to the floor. Drove her yesterday and the pedal is fine again so I guess that it must have been vapour lock created by the heat. I'll inspect the brake on the right side and will bleed all wheels so she has fresh brake fluid in her. Never, ever experienced vapour lock as it is unheard of in modern days (hehe).

sounds like a sticking piston causing the fluid to get hot. the front hoses on these break up inside and the brakes stick on as the fluid cannot return. other than it affecting the brakes i have found that it boils the grease from the wheel bearing causing it to seize and also blowing the head gasket as they overheat. daf owners club stock braided ones. if that turns out to be the problem

I'm suspecting Paul's favourite may be back in his possession awaiting restoration, although I may be mistaken.

I had a look on Wednesday and pushed the pistons in, The outer one went in easily but the inner one was stuck. Moved it in and out with a little help of the brake pedal and it seems to be ok now. did a test run and the wheel seems to stay cool. I think the water pump is leaking now grrr.

I think I have one on the shelf as well. Will have to investigate first if it is def the pump and not a hose coming from it. Hope none of the bolts will break off when I get it off. Thanks for the offer Paul

Well, water leak has been fixed. After removing the spare wheel, I noticed that the carburettor had coolant on it. After starting the engine, water dripped from the brass bit on the top of it where the hoses join to warm up the carb. just a little tweak with the mould grips solved the problem. I noticed that the spare wheel rests on it so it might happen again. Easiest water leak fix ever though.

nice work ready for the meet now then

I should be ready for the meet. Re-adjusted the belts yesterday and she seems to be a lot noisier now than before. Lots of vibration coming from the back too. Is that a sign that the belts might be too tight? The gap is between 2 and 3 mm as it states in the book of lies.

I put them on about 150 miles ago. The other day it felt that they were slipping a bit so checked the gap which was non existent. Adjusted them yesterday and since then when you do about 50 mph it vibrates quite badly and makes a rumbling noise (bit like wheel bearings). Also, the kick down seems to have a bit of a delay in it. Throttle fully down and she shoots off but a few seconds later you feel the kick down kick in.

And you are right. 2 to 3 is for the 55 I re-adjusted it and there is a bit of discrepancy between the 2 but adjusted it so they both fall between 1.5 and 2. The noise has gone and pulls quite decent as well now. Amazing how sensitive it is when it is over adjusted. It wasn't even that much.

She now has a fresh MOT so she can be on the road for another year. Fuel consumption lies somewhere around 35 m.p.g.

Good news on the MOT and not at all bad for fuel if that's overall!

The fuel consumption was from on our way to Ipswich via the motorway and our way back via the A121 so non-motorway. The MOT test was in it as well.
