Not much to update over the last few days because the main job was to clear up all the mess (tools, grease, oil and rags) that had accumulated around the engine over the past couple of months. At least I do now have a fairly complete and not-too-scary jigsaw rather than a large mound of bits: ![](http://www.dafmobile.ournet.org.uk/pics/matilda/engine/bits.jpg) Having got that far I fancied a bit of instant gratification so got out the cup-brush and the spray paint and produced this. They ain't perfect but they're only going to get oily in use ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) ![](http://www.dafmobile.ournet.org.uk/pics/matilda/engine/cowlings.jpg)

Nice one Joe! I did the same with Gavina's heat exchangers, wire brush then some hammerite, about three can's worth. They're covered in muck now but I don't think they've rusted yet....which is the real reason I did it and no, I'm not inclined to clean them anytime soon!
Edited to add - I now have 8 ashtrays!! ;D

I did Gladys too. Cleaned them up with a wire brush and some cleaning stuff then sprayed them with Matt Black high temp paint. Unfortunatly her ongoing oil leaks have made them glossy ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Once it is sorted I may have to paint the bright red or perhaps yellow

Well, we now have 4 new brake cylinders and a roll of gasket paper, plus a cylinder hone set on order for Thursday (one of those tools you never need, but when you do there's not much wriggle room!) The replacement barrel & piston will hopefully arrive after the weekend. That just leaves the rear crank seal to order tomorrow and the engine should be ready to go back together (after lots of cleaning!) Also hoping to order topcoat and some etch primer tomorrow which, with the filler and primer already here, should cover just about everything except for an exhaust (oh and tyres). Now I just need to get motivated in the cold ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Joe I have been ordered to give you a round of applause from the motor vehicle department at colege. Down to the fantastic work you are doing on this vehicle.
p.s. Jeff wants to use some info of your site in lectures?

Gratefully received, hopefully the final result will warrant it (don't discount the possibility of "start up / big bang / rod through block" just yet - these things can happen!)
Anything I put up there is there to be used as far as I'm concerned, so if it helps him he's more than welcome. I've added a "terms of use" page in case he needs confirmation of that for the college.

Well, rear seal and a 100ml test pot of paint are on their way. They couldn't identify the exact colour closer than two different codes (both Daf Rubilla but very slightly different shades!) so I've ordered a trial pot of the more likely one on the basis that, if it ain't that, it must be the other.
I've also now got measurements for the engine gaskets (all 6 of them!) because, despite my protestations elsewhere about cutting them to the metal, it occurred to me that templates might come in handy for others. Seeing as I've got about 6 sq ft of paper here I might even chop it up into as many sets as I can fit in case others need some while I'm at it.

Paint sample arrived today, and I finally remembered to get updated photos of the dashboard. So they can come first. The three bits now look like this, which I'm reasonably happy with: ![](http://www.dafmobile.ournet.org.uk/pics/matilda/gloveBoxDone.jpg) ![](http://www.dafmobile.ournet.org.uk/pics/matilda/dashCentre.jpg) ![](http://www.dafmobile.ournet.org.uk/pics/matilda/dashPanel.jpg) So, onto the paint. The 100ml tin arrived and a quick "dip" of a piece of packing tape looked promising: ![](http://www.dafmobile.ournet.org.uk/pics/matilda/paintDip.jpg) So I popped down this evening through the fog to brush a little on the car and see how close it was. The resuly was disappointing - too light and "orange" on the inside, which we hoped to match: ![](http://www.dafmobile.ournet.org.uk/pics/matilda/insidePaintBloom.jpg) And even a little light on the outside (which we hoped to be darker than): ![](http://www.dafmobile.ournet.org.uk/pics/matilda/outsidePaintBloom.jpg) Then I noticed that there was a small dribble on the can from when I'd dipped the packing tape. This had been done in a warm, dry, room rather than a cold, damp, workshop and seems to be a pretty well spot-in match for the original paint on the floor: ![](http://www.dafmobile.ournet.org.uk/pics/matilda/paintMatch.jpg) So, all good - we know the colour, and the correct paint code, and we know that Autopaints can mix it for us. So will be ordering 2.5l in the next few days and hoping that will be enough to make her shine again ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Hi Joe that paint looks a pretty good match to me after a few years fading! Does the wood dash now make the model a Grand Tourer or Super Delux? Better watch the insurance rating don't go up Joe!

Today I made a discovery that might force some, if not all, of you to reconsider everything you thought you knew about Daf engines. I finally started attacking bits with paraffin and discovered that, contrary to generally accepted wisdom, Daf did NOT make the engine cases out of compressed dry oil! It seems that they made them out of some form of white metal alloy and the dried oil was added later as a decorative / protective finish. Unfortunately, not knowing that before I started, I may have been a little harsh with the paint-brush and seem to have removed most of the coating. Does anyone know where I can get more? Or should I just admit my mistake and clean the rest off so at least it matches? ![](http://www.dafmobile.ournet.org.uk/pics/matilda/engine/cleaningCaseOutside.jpg)

I know - just seems a shame to remove it, what with it being original 1960s oil leaks and all that ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) Still, cranks seal and paint are both here now so really should start getting on with things. Barrel hasn't arrived just yet but that shouldn't stop me getting the rest clean & assembled ready - the pistons and barrels can go on last if needed. It's just so much scrubbing to get it all ready!!!! Inspection for the paperwork is now provisionally booked for the start of Feb as well, so I guess I just have to get on with it - not least because Betty is also meant to have some remedial bodywork done as well before Henblas in May!

And the two steps forward, one step back, continues! Picked up a lovely pair of barrels, a spare piston and a few other bits courtesy of Bob Scrivens today. The barrels are great, with about 3-5 thou total wear at the top which is well within the 12 thou allowed with the new rings. Test fitting a ring shows a ring gap of 15 thou - right at the small end of the 14 - 24 thou range given in the book. So all good there! The piston is also excellent, with no damage and nice tight ring grooves but (and here's the step backwards) it's 50.2 grams heavier than the old one. Matilda had the "early" style with a solid oil control ring and a drain slot each side but the replacement is the later type (3 piece oil control ring and drain holes instead of slots) apparently used from engine no 850 AK-130102. Apart from the weight difference I can't see any reason for not mixing them but I'm really not sure if I can safely remove 50 grams to get the weights the same - that's an awful lot of alloy!!! One thing I'm wondering about is that they both seem to have metal inserts clipped on inside them - it looks like the inserts in the heavier piston might just be enough to take most of the weight off. But, before I start levering them out to see, does anyone know what they're actually there for? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png)

Now we know Gavina's engine is turning on the crank and appears to have compression, there's always the option there Joe. It's only been lightly stripped thus far, and with your schedule being so tight you might be able to fix Gavina's more easily and get Matilda on the road for May. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) You would then be able to sort out Matilda's engine at your liesure (when you're not too busy enjoying driving her that is!).

Cheers, Pete. I'm trying to find options that wouldn't commit another sound engine but good to know it's available if needed. Bob's offered to have another look for the other piston he had, I've emailed Danny to see if he has a good used one - he's probably the most likely to have already stripped engines lying around! And I spoke to johnjenks yesterday about the engine in his spares car - he needs odd bits off it but the basic block should be available if we can get there to collect. So, one way or another, it'll get sorted. Meanwhile, I've still got the cleaning to finish, then the brakes to re-plumb, plus all the bodywork (although it's a bit cold and damp for that at the moment). So it's not like there's nothing for me to make progress on ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Just had word that Matt in Essex has solved our piston problems. With that covered, plus the barrels from Bob (both much better than the one I managed to save) and a replacement rocker cover, also courtesy of Bob (found a small crack round the bolt hole on one of the originals when I cleaned it up) I think everything's in place now to build an engine ;D

Got a sheet of 0.4mm gasket paper, made templates from the old ones and cut them. Would you like a set? ;D ![](http://www.dafmobile.ournet.org.uk/pics/matilda/engine/gaskets.jpg) edited to add: obviously, there are two of the cylinder base and oil strainer ones needed ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

I think I may be needing one of your gasket sets Joe if you're not needing Gavina's engine now! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) I was very surprised that Matt unearthed a pair of (believed) 32 pistons, new and in their boxes! ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) It really is an aladin's cave that parts barn, there's so many things that I never knew we had!

Long time, no update (and we like updates ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) ) but that's mainly because I haven't managed to get very much done for the past week or so. There was the room to paint for our landlord (he's got someone moving in with some potentially very interesting equipment but more of that in a minute) and we took a trip up to Hawick in Scotland on Thursday to collect an "EBay return" Standard Flying 8 for him - the guy paid, collected, then there was a bit of confusion over paperwork, so he wanted his money back. Cue a 520 mile round-trip with a car trailer. So Matilda's been sitting there quietly waiting. I did get down yesterday (totally exhausted), got the worst of the dried oil cleaned off the other half of her engine casing, cleaned and painted her pushrod tubes, and painted the other halves of her air cowlings so the engine is now ready for a quick thinners clean and reassembly as fat as pistons (which we're waiting for). But today has other stuff going on and tomorrow we're heading out for lunch with one of the TDC members who's in North Wales for the weekend from Hampshire - it'd be rude not to go say hello ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) If things no more interruptions to the important things in life (Dafs!!!) happen I should hopefully have more solid news (and photos) of an engine assembly in a week or so ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Meanwhile, the guy moving in to the newly painted room: No idea how professional (or not) his set-up is yet but he makes things - specifically, poly bushes for car suspension. Now that has all sorts of possibilities because I believe most of the cost of those things is in the time it takes to make up moulds. The rest is basically pouring the compound and waiting for them to set. So, having someone who might be willing to pour the compound into moulds made by, say, a Daf or Triumph owner in the next room could be a very useful facility. Assuming he's nice enough to show me how to make suitable moulds in the first place, of course.... ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Sorry for the delay with the pistons Joe. I know Matt said he'd post them this week and hopefully that's today. It couldn't have been done any earlier I regret; Matt's working day is a long one and shifts this week haven't ended before 9pm. Don't worry though, you've seem the photos so you know that they exist! ;D
