:oMy own experience and that of my customers during the 60's and 70's with regard to prior warning of belt failure, was in most cases that at low speed for several miles before breakage the back of the car would gently "shimmy" in a sidewards rocking movement as if the rear wheel/s were buckled. A couple of tales about my time working for a Daf Dealer:- A customer came in one morning to warn me that cats obviously liked to crawl onto the belt cover and sleep, because it was warm.He said he found this out that very morning as he drove of his driveway,I asked how he got the cat out?He replied "with a hose!" This was born out a few weeks later when a worried lady rushed into my office to say a cat was trapped under her Daf as she tried to drive off.I sent my apprentice round with a trolley jack and some tools. He was back in about half an hour with a big grin on his face.Apparently the cat was trapped with it's head between a drive belt and primary pulley "it wasn't half making a noise " he said.I asked how he got it out?He had jacked the car up, removed the belt cover, dropped the car down and then pushed the car backwards."You should have heard the noise the cat made". "Was the cat OK?" I asked "Don't know" he said,"I've never seen anythig move so fast!" starider. ,
