Rudolph, my newly acquired 44 phase 1 has a badly dented rear bumper. Three questions arise: firstly is the phase 1 bumper (fender) unique? Secondly - can anyone recommend someone who can restore same? Thirdly has anyone got a purchasable spare one? I suspect that stainless steel is very hard to restore well and that bumpers in good nick are of "hens' teeth" rarity.

I was waiting for that question Marcus! ;D
Yes, that is quite a rare bumper on the Mk1 44 as the latter type went onto plastic end caps.
I don't think we have any spare early bumpers so this might be a job for the Netherlands or perhaps find someone who can panel beat and repair it. That would be interesting to know and of benefit to others. Lots of places that restore chrome but not much mention of stainless steel...

Yes, "phase 1" B-bodies had the same stainless steel bumpers. So any 44 up to 1972 or 55 bumper will do.
With regards to where to get a new one, it might be worth trying Derbyshire too? Also DAF OC HQ.

How badly dented is "badly"? Stainless steel shouldn't be a problem for a half-decent panel beater to sort out if it's basically straight because once the dents are removed it's actually pretty easy (if time-consuming) stuff to resurface and polish. Unlike chrome, you can simply remove metal until it's flat and shiny on the visible side because there's no plating to polish through. This is what was possible on Matilda's in about 20 minutes of (distinctly amateur) beating and no polishing afterwards:

Rudolph has come home to "The Other End", my garages. He was waiting in an honoured place, under cover in a scrappie's garage. He had been put there by a forkie and was also removed thence in like manner to my borrowed car transporting trailer. This meant that he had not turned a wheel in my ownership and was most reluctant to leave the trailer upon arrival at home! A strong pull by my friend's Transit eventually worked the oracle and I now have a rolling if not a running Rudolph.
Time to make a first inspection. I think I've got a good 'un here. Rudy was first registered on The 6th of February 1969. His chassis no. is 569675 and his engine is 048783. This may mean something to someone. He has an old style green log book and an old style V5 minus the tear off bits. The last MOT was on March 23rd 1978 when the mileage was 37793. It is now a little over 38,000! Not much use then inthe last 33 years unless the milometer is bust. The original handbook is present in pale blue and in good condition. There are no tax discs. Neither is there a spare wheel.
Exterior condition - pretty good. Minor surface rust all over the place; a little rot in offside front wing towards the rear but not right at the back - also a half inch hole in the same wing where a mirror once lived I think. A ding in th e rear of the boot lid and a bent rear bumper - not as bad as it looks in the photo. A rotted through and large orifice in the rear of the near side rear wing. No major problem to repair. No rot under floor coverings in car and boot or under rear seat or under bonnet or round door frames. All tinware appears sound and present and the gutters are fine too. All simple enough for my local bodyshop. A total repaint will be necessary. I hope that they can match Jadella as well as they did for Becky's Bergina.
More later - no report poss. yet on mechanicals but I'm hopeful from the state of the under bonnet looks.

Hi, "Rudolph"looks good.My first Daf 32 was in Jadella.Make sure you check the surfaces of the primary and secondary units for corrosion,my early 44 had terrible corrosion.Hopefully yours may be one which had stainless steel discs.Regarding the rear bumper we used to send our damaged ones to a firm called SERKs, who would roll out the dents and re-spotweld as necessary.I don't know if they still exist, they also used to supply new/re-conditioned radiators, worth a check on the internet.Good luck with Rudolph. starider.

I noticed the "6 February '69" bit. Ten days before I was "registered".

Hi Marcus,
Matt's checked the parts barn and regret we don't have a spare all stainless bumper. We do have a 66 bumper if you could transfer the ends of your bumper to that, but it would have holes where the Variomatic badge would be fitted.

Well done on getting the car. It is a really interesting colour, love it!
Shame about the boot lid and bumper. I look forward to seeing how it all turns out.
All the best.

Stunning. Looks lovely, and to think that it had been in a scrapyard? And red seats!

Rudolph looks very good in the flesh except that his door fit is appalling, especially the driver's (off) side. When closed there is a good half inch gap in the rear vertical shut line; you can see inside through the gap! As both sides of the door hinges appear to be welded I fail to see how I can deal with this. Any ideas? Otherwise all is progressing well. I shall need new belts and tyres before venturing out, also air filter element. Engine runs reasonably well with new points and plugs but is a little hard to start. Even with a nice new battery I get slow starter revolution. I hate these cheeseparing 6v. systems! Every effort has to be made to ensure good earthing everywhere and avoid power loss - and I'm not much good with electrics to put it mildly. I must also check oils in the transmission; I suppose old oil can be drained from all the relevant places if they haven't gone dry already. Brakes are done and steering seems OK too. Oh - the interior is tan and undamaged save only for ingrained grime - easily removable I suspect. I will report further in due course.
