Hi everyone. I have bought a DAF 33 from 1973. My dad always owned Daf's when I lived in Holland and Belgium. I'm really happy with my purchase but would like to perform a full refurb on it which might mean to the bare metal. I am a car mechanic by trade so mechanics don't scare me, however bodywork does lol. I have also noticed that my DAF does not have any door mirrors. I think it is normal but if possible I would fit one. Are they still available. Also, she was registered on the 1st of June 1973. The DVLA has told me that if I can prove that she is built before the 1st of January 1973, I can drive her tax free. How can I get that information, or rather where? She does not drive at the mo as the clutch seems to be stuck on and won't allow me to select forward or rear. Idling is low (normal) but it will all be taken to bits anyway. She has not been driven since 1989 but her bodywork is very good. Little rust which seems to be in the paint rather than under it. No rot at all. She surely brings back memories and I would like to see her on the road in perfect condition. So, if anyone can give me any advice on pitfalls or anything else then I am open to suggestions. I'm looking forward to chat with you all sometime. I have become a member by the way. And my name is Alex and yes I am Dutch

Hi John, thanks for your reply. Ja, ik kan nog een behoorlijk mondje Nederlands praten I have been in the UK for 17 years now though. I have heard that the windscreen might be a challenge to take out and put back in. I have a workshop manual and as a mechanic I guess I have to forget all I know about "normal" car mechanics. I will gradually post my "problems" on here and hope that some of you can help me. I hope to start to take her to bits soon so she can be seen to asap. The clutch and CVT transmission will be a challenge as I have never worked on them. It will be a good learning curve for me.

Hi Alex and welcome, the 33 is a great little car and has loads of charature, when you take it out anywhere allow an extra half an hour because people either had one or want to know what it is! and the automatic just blows their minds. Just a few items to remember, always start in gear, drive it with your slippers on, so you can make the auto talk to you and think of the mechanical bits in a simple and logical way. As yours has not run for a while, the clutch shoe may need to be changed (The linings have been known to seperate from the shoes which can jam up the clutch) change all the lubricants if you can. With the windscreen, see if you can make contact with the local windscreen replacement guy he has got all the gear and turns up in his van, makes it look so easy. If we can help leave a message on here.
Best regards Bob.
