Hi Guys, I have been reading through all your old threads and have found that we all want to know when our cars were built due to tax purposes. I have sent some e-mails to Toon of the Dutch ownersclub and had a few replies. I'll paste them on here but they are in Dutch;
Basically, it says that those chassis numbers are built in 1972, but the paperwork that was handwritten is not more available. I have tried to contact the dealer who sold the car in Weston-Super-Mare, but it's not there anymore lol. Can we not get Toon to copy the paperwork he has got, sent it to this ownerclub and get it transllated? Surely that should be proof to the DVLA that they stopped building 33's before 1973. Just an idea. Should be well worth while £115 a year we don't have to pay hehe.

I don't know if anyone has tried this. I just come off the phone with the DVLA. All cars coming into the country are registered with a V55-4 (foreign) which then was transferred to the local tax office. The DVLA was introduced in 1980 and took all those documents to process them. All documents have been destroyed but they have copies on microfilm. You can order a copy for £5 when you complete a V 888 available on www.direct.gov.ukI will try it and will let you know how I get on.

Hi Rich, I will check most of items you have mentioned for dates. Radiator cap might be tricky as it hasn't got a radiator (air cooled) ;D I will keep you up to date as to what I can find. I will need to take my 33 to bits to make it rustproof etc as it hasn't driven since 1989 so all rubbers will be shot. I hope that the DVLA might have that reg document Toon is talking about so they can scan it as he says and maybe come up with a date. I'm hoping that when the DVLA started in 1980 might have forgotten to put something on the logbook which they had in their possession anyway. Fingers crossed.

Hi Folks, It seems to me that we should be pressing for our Classics to be made Tax excempt as most of them are now over 33 years old and have surely in their life paid for the right to use the roads, most have possibly only done less than 50K miles if that! Our so called motoring organisation appear to be a waste of time as they are only interested in making a lot of money for their shareholders and don't seem to want to rock the boat. Its a shame we could not be issued with your own number plate when you got your license, and could put it on the car that you use, then that would be to simple!!! OK I will put the soap box away now. My 33 was registered in 1973 and built in January. Hope you are all well, and hope to some of you at the meetings. All the best. Bob.

The only way that the UK tax laws will be changed is if the government (not the DVLA which is an agency carrying out the government's policies and instructions) changes the law.
You will recall that until 1997, cars that reached their 25th birthday became VED/Tax exempt, on a rolling/on-going basis. This was very sensible and fair for many of the reasons mentioned, plus the fact that in reality, most of these cars are not used a great deal.
Then a new (current) government came in promising that things can only get better, and they rescinded the automatic 25th birthday rule, to the current "manufactured prior to 1st Jan 1973".
In the last couple of years, classic car lobbyists in the UK tried petitions on the PM website, obviously to no avail.
The ruling is that if it can be proved to the DVLA that a car was made prior to 1st Jan 1973, then so be it.
But, in the case of our DAFs, it is hard to do this.
There is some debate as to where (if) the manufacturing records still exist. They probably do, but they will be either at the museum or DAF company archives, or even Volvo.
Then we have to be realistic here. Bearing in mind that we in the UK are probably not the largest group of DAF owners anywhere, (i.e. a few dozen) you have to ask whether DAF/the museum/Volvo/whoever, will really have the time/resource/inclination/will, to find official documents for a small probably low priority group? I may be wrong with this bit, but it's a consideration.
So, much as I would love to get the DAFs on the borderline included, I really think it will be a major task.

This is another e-mail I received, this time from the Daf museum.
Patrick Sleutjes
De volgende gegevens zijn bij DAF Club Nederland geregistreerd: TYPE_DAF SCODE KODE KENTEKEN CHASSISNR D6622 6622-00 20-05-XD 858230 D6623 6623-00 54-45-VX 858335 D6624 6624-00 12-54-XS 858391
Deze auto's zijn volgens de officiële instantie RDW op de volgende data op kenteken gezet: 858230 22-02-1973 858335 21-02-1973 858391 03-05-1973 Dit betekent dat jouw auto vóór 1 juni 1973 geproduceerd moet zijn.

Hi folks I just thought I'd join this discussion and as I'm new to the Daf scene I'm keen to learn a bit more. My 33's chassis number is 233868. Can anyone give help how early a car this may be etc or advise how I may get it checked officially? Thanks Marty

I might go to Holland next month in the car to see friends and my family. Not sure yet if I will, so let me know who I need to see, where and what to ask.

We are going to Holland from the 11th of March till the 17th. I'm taking the 306 estate so I can go and see Danny and fill up the back. Only £50 for the ferry and the diesel is only £0.89 there. Bargain lol.

Yes John, I have sent Danny an e-mail and asked if I can come over to see him so I can bring the biggest and heaviest pieces back with me. Do I have to be a member of the DCN to buy in their magazijn? I don't mind driving around to find bits and bobs. Has any of you looked at www.marktplaats.nl lots of DAF stuff on there too. I can't wait till I get my 2 66's. ope one will be able to survive.

I finally got a letter from the DVLA. They included all the car documents from when the car car was sold. Also the first taxing paperwork from 1973. I now know for sure the colour of the car, but there might be a number on there which might be of use to either DCN or the DAF museum. Just look at the price to tax it in 1973. You might have to copy the pic and blow it up. I'm looking forward to my trip to Holland on the 11th. Anyone needs anything from Danny?
