I have taken the whole front suspension off my 33 but I have a problem with the left hand shock absorber. It doesn't seem to want to come out of the rubber bush which holds it on the innerwing. I have tried hitting it, turning it with an adjustable at the top, spraying it in WD-40 and let it soak for about a week. The bush is made from rubber so heating it up would be a big no. The other side just fell out when I removed the top nut. I can have a look if I can find a new rubber bush next week in Holland, if I do then the old one might have to be destroyed. Anybody have any ideas if there are any other ways of getting it out?

Hi John, I don't know what is holding it. I just put a spanner on the top and tried to turn it with a bar so it would break the seal. No luck. It's either super rust but I think that it might have been treated with some stuff to make it stick. I will have to destroy the rubber and see if Danny has one. If not, there is a guy on Markplaats.nl who is selling loads of 33 stuff. Will go and pay him a visit too. He might have the strut and the rubber. I believe that the struts are serviceable, not like the modern ones you just take out and throw away?

on the 44 there is a plate on top of the rubber bush with a nice size lip around the edge. if the 33 is the same then you could try a hub/bearing pullers to pull the rubber of the shock strut. i have done this before on a vw beetle. it can be a bit awkward keeping everything straight while you tighten up the puller but it does work. hope this helps.

Hi all, sounds like a good advert for LOCTITE,seriously though, it is quite possible that there had been a problem at some time in the 33's life where the shock was turning in the mounting so a good squirt off Locktite or similar was used.I think John is correct, heat is possibly the only alternative.Try varying degrees of heat i.e.a little at a time, try to knock through at various times during the heating process. Good luck, starider.

Jeroen in Holland has a spare rubber and strut so I will get these off him. I will try to save the strut by using heat and also a puller. Main concern is to get it off the car at the moment so will cut the rubber to get it off and then work on it when off the car. Thanks for all your help. Darn Loctite lol.
