hi, well this is my first classic car. looking forward to owning this it should be fun.
I know nothing about DAF'S im afraid and being brutally honest i only got one because it was a cheap motor to buy. But saying that once i knew what it looked like and the gearbox and the cuteness of it, hopefully i have found a new brand of cars to enjoy? So i just thought i would say a quick hello and hopefully i will not bug to many people with silly questions about them.
I will be picking it up tomorrow evening so i will try and post some pictures up soon. and please if anyone can give me any advice on them i.e things to look out for or stuff to do then please feel free.

main piece of advice on a 33 is to 1.. ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN GEAR BEFORE YOU START IT UP
2. If you have to change between forward and reverse do it with one crisp movement, neutral is there for servicing only
3. If you miss the gearchange and it is running in neutral do not try to clunk it into gear, turn her off first, the reason for this is they have an automatic clutch and trying to force into gear with the clutch engaged (as anything above idle can cause) will cause the gers to already be spinning and can ruin the propshaft as it is a lightweight high speed unit made of aluminium with rubber mounted joints at each end (and hard to obtain)
4. If you are towing her home make sure she is in neutral, although in theory you can tow them in gear it does mean the clutch drum is spinning and this could also cause propshaft damage with sudden speed changes
check the oil every day make sure it has petrol in it ENJOY !!! if your driving it back and havnt driven one before dont be alarmed by how much revs it takes to get it going, once up to speed you will find you can back the revs off a fair bit before the speed starts to drop, this is called "Overdriving" and is the secret to economical daf driving, so in simple terms, rev it to get it going.. then drop the revs back an the belts will change and keep you cruising.. being a 33 I would think she will cruise at 55-60 comfortably, I look forward to seeing some pics

Cheers thanks very much for that. Well its coming back via a transport company with a trailer so there will be no towing it.......... today. Im a bit scared about the gearbox but i suppose its just a matter of time to get used to it? okay stupid question time, oil what grade of oil to people use?? And insurance companies any recommendations?
well i could not sleep last night really buzzing about picking it up, so anyway here we go to bring her home!!!

I use a 10/40 mineral oil in mine, but then she does like to lose it so I use a fair bit lol... the gearboxes are a "getting used to" tye of thing, but as I said in general the trick is learning how far you can back the throttle off without losing forward speed, and being ready to creep it back on on the hills, sudden floorings can create an upchange and this can lose you speed as she leaps into lower gear , once you are used to it though it becomes second nature
im insured through Carole Nash, used to be with Sureterm (now owned by Lancaster who were worse than useless)

Hello Neil, welcome to Daf ownership and the forum. I took delivery of my first Daf late last year although I have been a lifelong enthusiast. There are no stupid questions on here, and you will find the people very helpful. 33s are the most quirky of the Dafs in my opinion, and you will get lots of admiring glances. My best advice regarding any classic car is... fall in love with it, because there may be times when you feel it is testing your patience but I doubt it will throw anything at you that someone one here hasn't already had. I look forward to your posts and photo's

Well done on acquiring the best of all the Dafs! 33's are SO cute you'll love it. You can park it on a sixpence, that boot swallows more shopping than most modern hatchbacks, the engine sounds like a sewing machine & it uses so little (unleaded) fuel it brings tears to a petrol pump! Oh, and they're perfectly able to keep up with modern traffic. Keep the brakes regularly adjusted, though. How old is your car? I've had about 6, I love them and if you need any advice this IS the place to find it!

Hello. Well, all of the advice above is spot on. I also use 10/40 oil - it's generally more forgiving that the more widely used 20/50 which is thicker.
The little green light/button next to the stereo... Well firstly, it's quite unusual for a 33 to have a stereo - how posh!
But the button you are referring to (looks a bit like a hazard warning light switch found on modern cars) is the transmission low ratio hold switch. In other words, when switched on, it holds the car in effect low gear. You should hardly ever need to use it. And never, never, never switch in on when the car is traveling at 30mph or more. Things will go pop, bang and fall off, and you will be very upset. As will your sweet DAF 33.
It is really designed for when descending (or ascending) very steep hills - it helps engine braking going down hill.
One thing you can do and is a good idea to see if the engine/timing is set up properly, is switch the engine on, let it warm up and whilst on tickover, switch the switch on. If it's all set up properly, the engine revs should increase slightly. Also, another good test is the same as this, but with switch off, press the brake pedal, and again the revs should increase. This is a very good sign.
If you do the above and the revs don't increase, it's not the end of the world, but you would be advised to get the tuning/timing sorted - not a big job in the greater scheme of things.

it clearly needs work, i have someone booked for the welding work. and then hopefully it will get booked in for a m.o.t . its going to be my daily driver as well, a question i forgot to ask is actually about the m.o.t is about the rolling road test they do on a mot, do they have to change a mot for a daf? also seatbelts what does it need, it has a drivers seatbelt, also the nearside one is there but it does not have the metal plug bit that goes into the seat belt lock? and rear seatbelts it has none.

Those plastic panels are the covers for the Variomatic unit. When you're next under the car you'll be able to see the belts in all their glory.... However, these ought to be encased in plastic covers. What you have there is the central cover, with the ventilation slots in it, and a side cover. You'll have to fit the side cover first, as the central cover screws onto the side covers. If the wipers aren't working it could be the fuse that's blown; the fuse box is inside the glove box, secured by a screw-on cover. Check this first before going further. If the fuse is good, come back to the website BEFORE going any further, because your car is a "J" registration, which means it SHOULD be a 6 volt one. I see you've said the car runs on 12 volts & has a stereo, which must mean the car runs on 12 volts. MAybe the wiper motor wasn't changed over & as a result it's blown... Don't panic, mate! It can be fixed!
North Lincolnshire... My "N" registration Daf 33 used to whizz up from Barnet to Horncastle, where my in-laws used to live-small world!

I'm sure your 33 was on sale on here, did you buy it from Gloucestershire?
There are a couple of members of the Owners Club in Horncastle, otherwise you are not far from the Golden Daf Triangle of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire. So plenty of Daffers not too far from you!

hi and welcome
turn the squidgy rubber window squirter to the right, that's the switch.
Mike and Rob are nearest to you at Horncastle and Mablethorpe, i am Ripley Derbyshire.
I do have some 33 spares should you need help but the guys in Essex are the best bet

Hi and well done on the purchase. There should be a lump of rubber to the right of the steering wheel. Squeeze this in to operate the screen wash and twist to operate the wipers. It is a device to confuse the non-Daffing world. The rubber can perish and make you a bit soggy when you press it. A 12v electric conversion is available.
Good luck.

MoT - Politely remind the tester that the car is exempt from and must not be put on the rolling road to test the brakes (certainly the rear ones). They need to use a Tapley meter whilst driving the car on the road/forecourt. Serious and potentially terminal damage could be caused to the transmission if it is put on rollers. (The MoT testers' manual/guide tells them about belt driven cars not to be used on the rollers).
Yellow parts list - this sounds like one of our old club spares lists and yes, parts all pretty much available.
And finally, yes, this little 33 was advertised a few times on here - I think it even belonged to Sam Glover from Practical Classics for a bit a few years ago.
Oh the wiper washer switch - on my 33, you turn it to the left!

Headlights main beam/flash - switch up for main beam, down for main beam off. Pull it to you to flash the headlights.

Hi Neil, congratulations on your purchase. The 33 is of course the most fun DAF to own and drive although many will say that I am biased of course as I own 3 'A'bodies...
You are very well placed for assistance and if you need any used spares (aside from the usual stuff made from pure unobtanium such as propshafts and wash/wiper switches )then let me know!
Cheese,
Pete.

Panels are scarce as they are of the weld on variety. Most owners will repair with welded patch panels. Even DAFhobby will struggle to supply you a whole panel, they will have off cuts though. Doors, bonnets and boots are available used from time to time. I know we have a boot panel for example and I think a couple of doors, but none of it is mint and would need work.
Weather strips are also available used but best bet is DAFhobby who can supply most of it new. The boot aperture is a copy and not the same as the original but does the job.
You could join DAF Club Nederland for spares as they have a better selection, however NOS parts are far from cheap and they insist on payment by bank transfer which is free on the continent but expensive here as most UK banks charge for this.
Second hand odds and ends you can probably get from Essex DAFs if you don't mind a delay as we are hobbyists.
Hope this helps,
Pete.
