Hey folks, Just thought I'd say Hi; I've been perusing the board for a while now - nearly landed up with a DAF when I got the Viva but decided it needed a bit more work than I wanted to do at that point... I also nearly got a DAF converted to be an EV, until I saw the photos of what looked to be an attrocious bodge of a conversion... Anyhow, I've always faintly fancied a daf, and my partner being a USian is used to Automatics, so I reckon now (or the not to distant future) is the moment. She does around 30 miles a day, with a short stretch of motorway - so I'm thinking a DAF (ideally a 33, they're my fave) should cope okay with that (actually, she could skip the motorway entirely)... So, yes, on the look out for a cheap (Teacher's assistant and a Nurse, not great on the paying for classics front) DAF33 that needs not too much done (ideally not too much generally, but ideally not anything structurally but mechanically I'm pretty good)... Any great suggestions for where to find that perfect DAF wouldn't go amiss

Well, a tax free one would be nice ;-) I don't pay tax on either of the cars so far... although the cost in repairs keeping the viva remotely roadworthy's been more than a year's road tax One 'zed's in use (although I've not used it much through the winter, wuss that I am now); the other one is a big 'ol project bike, and is awaiting my attention with wire crimpers and soldering iron, 'cos it combines bits from 3 different ETZs, all of which had different wiring schemes. That and I want someone to powdercoat the wheels who doesn't double their estimate when they find out I'm female

Kate, I've a feeling I know you.....
Did you live in Bristol not that long ago? I believe I helped you clear out your garage with the help of a rather tall friendly Dutchman with a black Morris Minor.
I'm a chum of Guy Denning if that helps.....I remember the MZ's that you had, and indeed your Morris.
Can't be coincidence, this. If you are who I think you are, and you're ever back down in Bristol, let me know as I currently have seven DAF's in various states of repair, so I can help out with any questions you may have - and you can have a look around some yourself!
All the best!
Howard

Yup, that's me. I am indeed the Kate you're thinking of. I'm currently flip-flopping about the car, I've given myself until this afternoon to come to a conclusion on it.... Bodywork wise, it's pretty good down to the sills, then things go a bit wrong. There's been some chronic waterleak for at least the year it's been parked and probably longer. It basically needs the entire driver's side footwell replacing, possibly the passenger side's not great, but it's hard to tell, and the sills on both sides need a bit of work at both ends. Other than that though it looks sound... which means I'm trapped in the debate about 'do I get it now, and spend money on welding or wait and spend the money on a car'. It's not tax free, either. Pictures are here (not that many because it was cold and it started snowing): www.flickr.com/photos/49965961@N00/2397398685/in/set-72157604439188061/

It looks like it needs a bit more than a belt.

hi kate.
if you cannot weld then this could turn out quite nasty.
most of those photos do not look too bad but it is very dificult to tell how far the rust actually goes.
this is not a problem if you can weld but it can get VERY expensive if someone else is doing it. you probably know yourself from the viva that once you start something like this you need to keep going.
you may be better off paying for a car in better condition. it may work out cheaper in the long run.
think carefully and let us know what you decide.

There you go. Small world, isn't it? Actually, I will remember that phrase when I find another hole appearing in a car of mine. It can't be a BIG hole if the world is small, can it???
Funny how thinking like an idiot helps me through my life.

hi.
one of my minis looked better than this and ended up having a 2 foot by 4 foot sheet cut up and welded into it to hold it together.
i have been caught out a few times by cars that dont look too bad and are only held together by paint and rust.
i do my own welding so it just takes me a bit more time but it can get expensive unless you know a friendly welder.
good luck anyway. let us know if you are having the car.

Well, we've opted to take the car. Kind of more a putting off a final decision than anything else; hopefully I can get it going, we can get it up on the ramps and then I can have a better look. If it's unsalvagable we've spent a little money recovering the car, and we'll re-offer it here. If it's repairable within our budget then It Shall Be Done I'll be sure and snap some more pics once it's on our drive
