He Everyone,
I am looking for advice for a good stereo / CD to buy for my husband for his birthday for his Daf 33 (1974). I was wondering if anyone knows of one that is kind of retro and might fit in with an old Daf. Will also need speakers.
Thanks.

'eck, that's a good one. Not the everyday sort of question! Presumably you'd need a Philips set Not many places to secure a stereo securely in a 33, although I put an authentic 60's 6-volt Philips and single speaker radio in a 32 I have as I doubt if it would greatly appeal to the hats-backward brigade! Speakers! Well, in the past I've used authentic 70's grilles with more modern speakers so they look good and sound good (but make sure, if you'll pardon the expression, you don't have a tweeter that sticks out too much!). For everyday motoring I just use an old tape player that is pretty good quality (and also cheap!) and just use a wee MP3 player via a tape adapter. No one will pinch that and it's easy to hide or simply take out the player when you don't need it. I know this doesn't help you if you want a CD player, but in all honesty I can't think of anything that would fit in authentically. I'm renowned for being a Luddite as regards new technology anyhow, and I think a crunchy AM set suits a DAF very well, and also - I love to hear the sounds of the engine, the transmission etc and I never get tired of that! I will have a look around though in various places and see if there is such a thing. You DO sometimes have to look back to look forward (or something!). Best wishes, Howard

I find the simplest way to get cd/mp3 in an older car is to use a small fm transmitter (£5 off ebay). This way you can use any fm radio to play the cd etc. The problem I've found with period car radios (my everyday car is normally 10 to 15 years old) is that the cassette player fails first. You can get a goodmans cd car cradle from argos for about £25 but the cd player is not so good. These items can be powered off a cigararette lighter - fairly easy to fit a power socket if you don't have one already. Mounting the the speakers on the rear shelf using double sided stickies, careful mounting at the front means you can remove the kit with few traces if you so wish.
