Here is my new project a 66 estate good body but sills will need sorting I got the engine running today and it seemed to go into gear forward and reverse am not sure if there is a knack to engage the gears ?

Hello. Gosh, a 66 estate? Can't remember when I saw or read about an estate! Cool.
OK, Number 1 lesson re putting a DAF "into gear". Always ensure that the selector lever is in either forward or reverse before you start the engine. I.e. not in the middle "neutral" position. (It is OK to start in neutral though (and essential) if you are simply starting the engine to check the engine/service etc) It's a good idea to make sure the handbrake is on, and/or make sure your left foot is hovering over the brake pedal just in case you instinctively blip the throttle and take off.
It might seem illogical to start "in gear". But, if you start in neutral, especially on choke, the engine will be spinning enough for the centrifugal clutch to be engaging. If you try and select forward or reverse from neutral with the clutch spinning, you will be greeted with almighty crunching and grating of teeth. This will alarm you and the car won't appreciate it either! (It is the equivalent of trying to engage a gear in a manual car without pressing the clutch pedal.
That all said, it doesn't mean that when you are on the move and you want to change from forward to reverse and vice versa, that you have to switch off - all you do is gently but swiftly move the lever with the engine ticking over. If you get a crunching in this instance, then your tickover is too high.

I have just picked it up from Plymouth as a non runner along with a Triumph Dolomite but got it started and it moves on its own but yes tricky gear shift Richard.

Photos really are quite easy to load (hint)!
What do you mean re "tricky gearshift"? Is it something like lever hard to move (remember the lesson about starting in gear unless carrying out checks and engine maintenance, when neutral is the way).
Or, do you get it into gear OK, then the engine seems to rev very high before you move?

Hi and welcome in your situation At the moment I would disconnect the vacuum pipe from the intake manifold and put a plug in, make sure tick over is low and even and clutch drum not spinning. Why I say this is the pipes to the vario transmission maybe leaking and the tick over maybe a bit high. you can now set up the engine and move the car around. When you get the time you can check the vacuum system for leaks and correct operation.

I thought they were a normal style plate clutch ?? as said above put it in gear BEFORE you start the engine, and when going from forwards to reverse make sure your absolutely stationary and dont pause in the middle of the change.. straight from one to the other
