Hello all,
I popped over to Luton last night to view this 44:
dafcars.proboards37.com/index.c.cgi?board=Sales&action=display&thread=1206009869
and have bought it – I pick it up next week. Condition wise it is much as you would expect. It only has 20200 on the clock
Good bits:
Engine pulls well when gas applied
Body work is not bad at all – all the terminal areas are rust free and the front wings seem in decent nick – the car was garaged for much of its life and the owners have quickly repaired any dings with a dab of waxoly, primer and brushed on paint. The floors are solid, sills are OK, bonnet and roof are mint. The old owners had added after market wing mirrors and seem to have fitted them properly
The interior is all complete and there and in remarkable condition – the cloth seats have hardly been sat in and there is no sun bleaching to the black cloth that has a crepe like quality all the buttons and switches work fine the window washers are strong when pumped – the interior needs a damn good scrub and clean but I reckon an hours worth of detailing should do the trick. No carpets in this one.
The car was bought by the current owner from the original owners in Devon and driven back to Hertfordshire apparently only stopping once at Bristol when it wouldn’t re start – the points were adjusted and off it went again. When you consider that it had pretty much sat for the last 8 years and I doubt it ever went on a motorway before it’s a good endorsement of the toughness of the flat 2.
The Bad Bits
Where the tin worm has bit there are some nasty bits- firstly, the exhaust system which can only be described as extraordinary – the tail pipe s completely rusted and jagged at the end – it looks like a large part of the exhaust isn’t DAF – the car’s history confirms that an ingenious mechanic in Devon crafted one out of bits of Metro – (how we forget how easy the internet makes sourcing parts – remember what it was like 15 years ago?). So I am going to contact Danny and get a quote for a new system.
The passenger or offside door is in a right state although not at first glance – apparently the window has never worked or at least failed in its first couple of years on inspection I suspect a combination of a dodgey window seal and poor or neglected rust proofing inside the door during manufacture. Anyway I think the consensus is that I will replace the whole door.
The offside rear wing behind the rear wheel arch looks nasty as well and will need some welding to repair
The bottom forward end of the driver’s door and the bit between the door and the wheel arch also needs looking at.
There are a myriad of general little bits and tings etc that will need sorting as well.
The engine is very rough on idle with the battery warning light flickering away until revs are applied – it has had a new coil and battery but I suspect it needs a good tune and those points need looking at – any suggestions?
Also starting is a bit intermittent – we started OK first time but then when we switched it off and tried to restart the starter motor whirred but didn’t turn the engine – waiting a few minutes and giving it another shot it then kicked in after some extraordinary noises so this needs looking at if it is to be a daily driver.
So what to address first?
Well firstly it is going to get a good clean inside and out.
Next job will be to address the starting issue and get a new exhaust fitted
Then the body work – I will probably take it to a body shop and get all the tin worm sorted and a respray in the original colour (the white one – will have to look it up) Given the expense this might not happen for a while so until then waxoyl or similar will be going on all exposed rust with some primer on the top.
Any other suggestions?
Oh – and I will join the owner’s club!
