BE VERY CAREFUL!!! It's possible the shock absorber or the spring have jammed. Both possess a HUGE amount of energy and releasing this could cause serious injury if not tackled properly.
If the car is drivable I'd carefully drive it to a reputable tyre service shop & ask them to investigate. If the staff will allow it take plenty of pictures to show us what happened.

Morning Andrew thanks for advice don't think it's the spring, shock absorber seams to have seized when at maximum extension so will not be undet load, that corner of the car is very high.

Sounds like you'll need 2 new shocks! They should always be replaced as matched pairs anyway and besides which, if one has failed the other one's probably on the way out. Good luck!

Steve is your man for local spares! I'm not sure but the shocks might be shared with some other cars so might be easy to get hold of.

Yes you are corect Bob, it's the damper inside the strut that was the problem. I've removed the strut sriped and removed the damper cleaned all the gunk out of the valves in the piston, cleaned everything and rebuilt it with new fork oil. It's back on the car and seams to be working OK at the moment, fongers crossed.
