Definatly was dreading it for some reason... Should of had more faith, seemed to float all the way home after lol The only minor that he put on was the handbrake was only just Above minimum requirement for a pass but not too worried about that I normally chock her wheels anyway if I'm on a slope.

Daf handbrakes were never all that..... No hills in Holland!

Daf Handbrakes are TERRIBLE. I drove all the way down Chatsworth Road the other day with mine on and barely noticed! (Goldie has passed her MOT recently too!)

So true - several times over the years, I've belted along for a bit, to find the handbrake still "on". It is indeed the lack of Dutch mountains that perhaps led to the design.

To be fair the reason for this is partly the design of the transmission; The standard method of adjusting rear drum brakes is to tighten the shoes against the drum and then slacken them off until the drum is just spinning freely (when I trained on V.W.s there I was taught a phrase for this, which I WON'T repeat here....) Unfortunately the Daf Variomatic transmission prevents the wheels from being spun without removing the belts first. The workshop manual states that the belts should be removed to adjust the rear brakes, but adds that in practice there's enough "slack" in the system to allow for this. There isn't! I expect Daf mechanics left more adjustment on a Daf's rear brakes then they would on say, a British Mini (which has the same braking system on the rear wheels as a Daf 33) so that the brakes wouldn't wear and run hot, which can happen if they're adjusted too tightly.
The wire linkages controlling the handbrake on a Daf 33 were an odd design, too. The critical measurement of 441mm for the length of the cable from the dividing yoke to the drum needs to be checked carefully and set up properly before the brakes can be adjusted. The hand brake CAN be made to hold the car very well, but it does need a good "fettling" to get it right.....

Bit of a long shot but does anyone have a bleed nipple/screw for a rear wheel cylinder? Its the old ATE type.. I bought 2 of eBay last year and got round to fitting them this weekend but didn't realise one had the nipple missing... I've managed to get one to fit but it's a bit short and just hope it doesn't leak, seems ok for now... Also does anyone know what size the split pins are on the hubs? Many thanks

I struggled to find bleed nipples for the 44, not helped by the fact that DAF used two or three different types during production. As it happens though, I just got new split pins to replace mine, these are a perfect fit but I don't know the official size.
