Just a quick update. I bought a new alternator off an auction site recently & the fan belt off the club. The next task is to set the timing with the strobe light. The brakes is the next job which I will source from the club. Once the engine & running gears are set up. The next task will be replacing the sills...

I'm happy to help with any advice you need with the timing or the brakes! Both are pretty standard to check and repair and you'll find a strobe lamp a helpful addition to your toolbox! Brakes are disc and drum ("drum and bass" to "da Kidz") with a servo and the rear drum brakes on the "Marathons" are self-adjusting.
Can't help with the sills-bodywork's beyond me!

Thanks Andrew. I will certainly be asking questions on here pertaining to my 66's resurrection!

Blimey Richard, I had forgotten about all the useful stuff there is on there. Great work.
Of course once the timing is done, and mixture set, the strobe can be used to set the tickover properly and check that the carb micro switches activate at the correct RPM.

Thanks Richard & John. Yes I have seen those very useful & excellent 'help' pages on the website. I have directed Dave, the mechanic, to those pages. In between jobs, the old girl is slowly being revived.

An update on my DAF 66. Dave, the mechanic, fitted the new plugs & set up the ignition timing today but still no power. He is not sure if the carb is ok. He also checked the brakes and the front need a n/s front calliper and rear brakes are good but one cylinder is leaking on driver's side. Also the vacuum solenoid valve under the bonnet has an outer rubber gaiter which collapses under load of engine. I will order the appropriate parts accordingly.
i bought a Solex carbs rebuilt kit too a few weeks ago as we needed to replace the gaskets.
Any tips or views on the lack of power??! Your advice and thoughts would be much appreciated.

Assuming your mechanic has done all the obvious things, such as checking the timing, valve clearances, condition of the plugs and points, cleanliness of the filters and the action of the capacitor (if there's a big spark when the points are forced apart, it's not working properly!) then I'd suggest doing a compression test on each cylinder; a big difference might suggest a head gasket failure, which will mean lack of power. Have you blanked off the vacuum pipe at the inlet manifold before doing any tests? If not, the loss of vacuum will cause the engine to lack power and to run badly, if at all.
Try Easystart down the carb & see if it runs better; this would suggest an incorrect mixture. If spraying WD40 around the carb makes it run better there's an air leak in the carb somewhere-often on the mounting to the top of the inlet manifold.
These are just off the top of my head. I'll try to come up with some other thoughts later

Thanks Andrew. Great stuff and I have directed Dave to this post.
If you think of anything else that'll be helpful.
Thanks
