Hi, I need a bit of help. On a daf 44 where does pipe 4 on the diagram below go and what is its function? Does it just stop at the cross-member as shown in the photo? I am assuming it doesn't go to the silencer? If it doesn't then what does fit on the short connector on the side of the silencer!? This was blanked off on the old exhaust but is present on the new one Thanks, Tom

The exhaust gases on all air-cooled Dafs help the car's running by heating the carburettor, and the air drawn in via the air cleaner is also heated by the same method. One pipe runs from the rear of the near-side heat exchanger up to the carburettor hot-spot and the second one runs FROM the hot spot down to the transfer exhaust silencer. these pipes were not exactly "Daf's finest hour" in terms of design and frequently rusted through, usually being "blanked off" by dealers as a cheap repair, to avoid the large cost of a new inlet manifold. The pipe number 4 on the diagram should connect the circular opening under the air filter to a circular opening on the rear of the near-side cowling, so thus allowing air heated by the cylinder fins to be used by the engine. There's a lever on the air filter, marked "S" and "W" for summer and winter; it should be set to "W" when the temperature's below 10 deg C.
I have some spare pipes if yours are missing or rusted through, if it helps. PM me if you need to know more!

Thank you. I think I understand! So is the pipe shown coming out of the air filter in this diagram pipe 4? That doesn't seem to match?

What is the function on the flexible pipe showing in the photo of the underside of my car that terminates at the cross member?

The flexible pipe is the one carrying warm air from the cylinder cowling to the air intake. The 2 pipes carrying the exhaust gases to and from the hot spot are rigid steel and one is welded to the rear of the nearside heat exchanger, the other is joined to an opening on the nearside front of the transverse exhaust silencer by a clip and it runs through the cross-member and then into the hot spot. I suspect your car has been "adjusted" by having had the opening on the transverse silencer blanked off.
I think I have a spare transverse silencer for a 44, if you need it. Whereabouts is your car?

Thank you. So am i right in thinking that there should be a pipe where i have shown on the photo with the blue arrow and that the red arrow shows where the pipe that should go to the silencer has been removed blanked? I have a new silencer but thank you anyway. I assume the best course of action is to just blank that outlet on the silencer? The car is in Devon near Exeter if any club members are nearby and what to have a look

You need to put the flexible hose between the two blue arrows on your picture and this will allow the engine to draw warner air on a cold day, so you've understood that part perfectly!
As to the hot spot connection, it's a bit difficult to make out from your picture but I think the pipe in the picture runs back to the transverse silencer. If you're not going to have the hot spot connected it's important to blank off BOTH parts of the hot spot, otherwise you'll have exhaust fumes in the engine bay (DANGEROUS!) and a really loud noise of an exhaust blowing! Remember, ONE pipe comes UP from the rear of the heat exchanger into the hot spot, and the OTHER pipe goes FROM the hot spot back to the opening on the front of transverse silencer.
There are a number of members in Devon (and I was born there!) so you're in good hands! Make sure you join the Daf Owners Club, where you'll receive an excellent quarterly magazine, crammed with good advice and Daf stories! Where in Devon are you?
