Dear All,
My 33 has developed an annoying squeak, and I should be grateful for any advice as to what many be causing it. I've investigated it myself, and can confirm that it's not the dynamo or the bearings therein, as I loosened the fan-belt and the squeak was still there. Earlier today I removed the number-plate, bumper, grille, fan cover and fan, before loosening and then re-tightening the bolt holding the pulley to the front of the engine, spraying all the constituent parts with WD40..... No difference!
Although the noise appears to emanate from the front of the engine, I'm beginning to wonder if the noise is actually from the back, perhaps in the region of the clutch. I believe there's a bearing onto which the drive shaft rests at the back of the engine, although I've probably not described this to clearly.
Have a watch (or perhaps that should be a "listen"!).....

I would agree its probably at the rear of the engine. (remember mine? it sounds similar.) It could be the bearing in the centre of the flywheel where the outer flywheel shaft rests, Does the noise reduce or get worse as the clutch takes up ? If it does not change as the clutch takes up or releases, I would suspect the crankshaft rear main bearing. Re-record the video clip, holding the microphone near where you can see the flywheel rotating.

Hi Andrew, sounds very familiar, first test, with the engine running pour a little water onto the generator belt and see if the noise disappears, if it does it means the belt/pulleys are too polished. If that doesn't work have a look at the distributor cam and make sure there is a little grease on the cam. If it is neither get back to me.

Had a thought, with the engine turned off, does the noise still appear if you physically rock the engine from side to side?

Many thanks for all your suggestions! We've just returned from the Tewin Classic Car Rally, to which Daffy took and returned us perfectly! She received many admiring glances and several requests to be sat in! As to the noise, I haven't tried putting water on the fan belt to the distributor, but I can confirm the noise seems to disappear once the car speeds up and the drive engages, which is leading me to a clutch bearing.....
Investigations will be delayed more than somewhat as we're off on holiday tomorrow, and we're travelling there in a vehicle with a horizontally opposed engine layout and continuously variable transmission...... A Subaru! I'll report back once the holiday is over and I'm back. Thanks again!

Final question, does the squeak disappear if the engine is ticking over when in gear?

Final question, does the squeak disappear if the engine is ticking over when in gear? Hi, Starider, The noise is the same regardless of whether the car is in forwards, reverse or neutral, so I don't think the selector is involved. At a recent EssexDafs event Matt, Bob and I changed that little rubber grommet that slips in between the gear selector and the rod that connects it to the primary unit. That stopped an exceedingly annoying rattle every time I moved off! As I say, we're away at the moment, but will be tackling this problem together with re-setting the tracking and balancing the front wheels once we're back from our holiday. Watch this space............
