I'm new to this forum, and attach pictures of the 1975 DAF 66 I've recently bought from DAF Classics in Peterborough, It's lovely, and very different from the Trabant I've been driving for the last five years. But the paintwork needs touching up in places, and despite quite a while on the internet I'm unable to identify the colour name. There's nothing that looks like a suitable code on the plate under the bonnet. It's basically tomato red, the same colour as one featured in an old episode of Van der Valk I caught on ITV4 the other week. The only similar red in the 1975 paint range I found is "Inferno" - but that doesn't look orange enough. It looks more like "Nationa" - but that only seemed to run up to 1972. Or even "Coraldo Red" - but that's listed as a truck colour. Graham at DAF Classics doesn't think it's either of the first two. Can anyone help, here? I suppose it's entirely possible that someone on here has owned the car in the past after, all. Sean, Beckenham

If you keep an eye on "a well known internet auction site" you may find a Daf cars colour chart; they come up for grabs occasionally. I had a huge problem in finding the correct colour for my 33 when I wanted it resprayed, but was eventually successful. The colour I needed was "bergina" although the D.V.L.A., in their more prosaic way, called it maroon! I'll have a rummage through my Daf stuff and see if I still have the colour chart somewhere and contact you via this forum if I do. I take it you've joined the club, as it's a great source of information about the cars.
Beckenham..... My brother lives there! I can feel a visit coming on........

I think I recognise the car. A few years ago I went to look at a sad 66 in Leicester that needed a new home, and I think a chap up Sheffield way eventually bought it. Not sure what happened between then and Graham. DAFs tend to disappear. Anyway, by the by. Only last December, we ran an article in the club magazine about paint colours and codes. Sadly, we don't have a big readership, but heyho. The file is too big to put on this forum, so I've uploaded it to our main Club website - www.dafownersclub.co.uk. Here hopefully is the direct page link www.dafownersclub.co.uk/uploads/1/0/9/5/10958195/daf_paint_codes.pdf DAF paint codes - December 2021It that doesn't work, go to the main website and click on "Magazines, links and albums" and you should see it there. If the car has been painted in its original colour (some people get strange ideas and repaint cars in non original colours) then it's almost certainly Inferno. Hope this helps. The current Ed.

Enormously helpful, both - many thanks. That's a very useful article, Richard - especially as the Inferno swatch it includes actually looks like the colour of the car, unlike the samples I've seen on my Google searches. I'll get hold of a couple of cans of that, and see how it goes over some light grey primer. I suspected someone here would have come across the car in the past.
And it always amazes me how many people have a relative in Beckenham, Andrew!
Best wishes
Sean

Hi, if it's quite a bright red it's possibly INFERNO, if you can post the paint code I may be able to quickly identify the colour. There is another Daf red ROSITA but I have in the back of my mind that the 66 was not offered in that colour. I can check further if required. As Andrew says few vehicles were registered in the colours that the manufacturer called them, as Andrew says the manufacturers colour name is Bergina which does not give any indication of a colour which it actually describes it, as it really is Maroon. Logical really, imagine a police officer looking for a stolen car in Bergina!

PS If you look at the picture of my 33 Pick-up, the red paint is INFERNO. On the V5C the colours are described as red and yellow.

Theres a paint company in Brighton who have the list of Daf colours, I went to the classic car show in NEC recently and saw them there. They sent a sample of my colour, Averto green. It is a good match. I think Daf only use names for their colours, not numbers. They are; Autopaints Brighton. Shop.autopaintsbrighton.co.uk

Logical really, imagine a police officer looking for a stolen car in Bergina! Yes, that would be amusing: "What are the car's details, Sarge?" "According to the Swansea computer, it's Bergina in colour, Constable" "Thanks, Sarge, that's a lot of help...." I had my 33 resprayed a year or so ago by a local company in Barnet, who did a pretty good job. If you want so see a few pictures of it, please PM me with your email address and I'll forward them.

More grateful thanks for replies. I'd already seen the Brighton firm, and will order now from them.

I sold JGT 685N to a guy in Manchester shortly before I left Sheffield to move back to Ireland. It came up for sale again a few months ago and I think had changed colour from red to blue. Mark

Shop.autopaintsbrighton.co.uk Like most manufacturers, DAF did indeed use (sometimes hard to understand!) names for their shades. But, again as with most car makers, their colours did have paint codes to be used when getting paint made up. The final page has the relevant codes against the names - bit hard to read though as I couldn't make the print any larger.

Inferno it was, then. The colour from Autopaints Brighton was an excellent match and, despite my low level of skill as an autosprayer, the bits I've done so far are a big improvement. many thanks for help with this.
