This morning at 8:30 I ventured forth to my local garage for the Daf's annual M.O.T. The garage are well used to testing my various eclectic cars over the years and always enjoy testing the Daf, as it means they can also test their Tapley meter, which is rarely, if ever used otherwise!
As there was no car booked after mine the tester was happy to let me have a good look under the car, as he carried out his examination. I found that the protective shield that covers the transmission units and belts was not properly clipped into its support bracket at the rear, and so with the aid of a 13mm spanner I undid the six bolts, slid the cover into the slot and replaced the bolts. I'd recently fitted a new exhaust pipe, together with new rubber supports and wanted the examiner to confirm all was well-it was.
Although exempt from the emissions test, the tester was happy to test them and found the CO was 3.8%, which is bang on, as the recommended level of 3.5-4.5% CO. When I applied the brakes it dropped to 1.8%, before rising slowly to about 3.5%; indicative of the mixture weakening when the vacuum valve opened.
We next tested the brakes....the tester's macabre sense of humour came to the fore when he said "aim for the wall of tyres. If the brakes fail you'll bonce off!" Two tests were done, one for the handbrake & one for the footbrake and both were very good-the footbrake locking the front wheels.
The result was, not only a test pass with no advisories, but a comment from the tester to the effect that my Daf had the brakes, emission levels and carburetion of a car from the 1990s! Praise indeed!

I always think you should get a special award or MOT plus or something if there are no advisories! Great news
