That's so true and really interesting. Back in the day, Setright used to champion the DAF Variomatic.
We have printed a couple of those in our past magazines. He also wrote a DAF brochure that gave the "technical and non-technical" description on the Variomatic.
With regards to DCT systems, I think he must have retired, but another knowledgeable writer was "Honest John", who for may years had a weekly spot in the Daily Telegraph. He used to have his own website as well, offering lots of advice to readers.
He often used to urge extreme caution and advice re certain DCTs - basically the sheer complexity of them.
